
UNI Picks Up A 46-7 Homecoming Win over Northern Colorado

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa football team picked up a 46-7 Homecoming victory today in front of 15,277 fans against the Northern Colorado Bears. The Panthers improved their overall record to 1-2.
Senior David Johnson led the Panthers with 173 rushing yards along with his first rushing touchdown of the season. Sawyer Kollmorgen finished 11-20-0 for 159 yards and two touchdowns with Kevin Vereen Jr. picking up a 39-yard reception for his third touchdown of the season.
On the defensive side of the ball, Max Busher came away with a team leading six tackles, including one sack for a loss of six yards. Xavier Williams finished with five tackles and two key sacks during the game. Deiondre' Hall also racked up five tackles and came away with a huge blocked punt in the first half.
Vereen Jr. got the Panthers on the scoreboard early in the first quarter after Kollmorgen found him down field for a 39-yard pass with 13:48 on the clock. The score was Vereen's third touchdown of the season, burning 1:12 off the clock for three plays and 59 yards to give UNI the 7-0 lead.
Michael Schmadeke added to the Panther score line with 7:33 left in the first quarter. The junior knocked in a 33-yard field goal, ending a 12-play, 4:37 drive to make the score 10-0.
Schmadeke opened the second quarter with another field goal for the Panthers, putting UNI up 13-0 with 14:13 on the clock. The 43-yarder was a career-long for the Waterloo, Iowa native, knocking 5:02 off the clock for 13 plays and 54 yards.
Junior cornerback Hall showed his athleticism to a packed UNI-Dome with 11:29 left in the first half when he blocked a punt on the UNC 10-yard-line. The play resulted in a safety, giving the Panthers a 15-0 lead. UNI wasted no time on the next play as Johnson broke free for a 41-yard rushing touchdown to make the score 22-0.
UNI continued to dominate on the ground late in the half as Darrian Miller found the end zone for the second time this season. The junior battled his way into the end zone for a 10-yard rushing touchdown to put UNI up 29-0. The drive burned 2:30 off the clock for five plays and 63 yards.
Miller was able to slip another touchdown into the end zone with 21 seconds left to play in the first half, putting UNI up 36-0. Kollmorgen found Miller on the outside for an easy 14-yard receiving touchdown ending a nine play, 70 yard drive.
UNI opened up the scoring in the third quarter with its third field goal of the game. With 7:36 left in the quarter, Schmadeke converted on a 24-yarder to make the score 39-0. The drive took 3:33 off the clock for 10 plays and 78 yards.
Northern Colorado was able to jump on the board late in the third quarter after Darius Graham scored a four-yard rushing touchdown at the 3:31 mark. The drive burned 4:05 off the clock for nine plays and 65 yards.
Brion Carnes added to the Panther stat line with 2:29 left in the game when he scored his first rushing touchdown of the season to give UNI a 46-7 lead. Carnes rushed into the end zone for a three-yard pickup, ending a 3:57 drive that included nine plays for 55 yards.
Carnes' touchdown was the last score of the game, giving the Panthers the 46-7 win. UNI will return stay in the Cedar Valley this week and return to action against Tennessee Tech on Sept. 27. The game will kick-off at 4 p.m. inside the UNI-Dome.

- Prior to the game against Northern Colorado, David Johnson was tied for fourth all-time at UNI in career rushing touchdowns. With his 41-yard rushing TD against the Bears, the tie was broken and now owns the sole fourth all-time career rushing touchdowns (33).
- David Johnson finished with 173 rushing yards against Northern Colorado. He now has 16 career 100-plus rushing yard games. He is now fifth all-time at UNI in career all-purpose yards (4,866).
- Sawyer Kollmorgen is now sixth all-time at UNI in career passing touchdowns. After his two today, he now has 41.
