Panthers Cap Regular Season With 2-0 Victory

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team capped a three-game series with the Loyola Ramblers this afternoon with the Panthers scoring a 2-0 victory on Senior Day.
UNI (28-19 overall, 14-12 MVC) scored a pair of runs on six hits picking up the win over the Ramblers (22-30 overall, 11-15 MVC).
Julia Hunter put UNI on the board in the third inning giving the Panthers a 1-0 edge. Hunter was hit by a pitch to reach base and scored on a defensive error by the Ramblers. Caitlin Wnek drew a walk putting runners at first and second. Gina Brown reached on an infield single followed by a late throwing error. Hunter scored on the throwing error, Wnek was tagged at the plate to end the inning.
Wnek made her way around the bases for a score in the sixth inning extending the Panther lead to 2-0. A trio of singles from Wnek, Brown and Rikki Alcaraz loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning. Micalla Rettinger kept the bats going with a fielder's choice reaching base safely while Wnek beat the throw at the plate, lifting the Panthers to a 2-0 advantage.
A solid pitching performance from right-hander Jamie Fisher kept the Rambler bats quiet throughout the game. Fisher went the distance on Senior Day tossing a complete game while picking up her 17th win on the season. Fisher (17-13) kept the Ramblers scoreless in the two-hit shutout while tallying five strikeouts.
The Panthers will take the field again on Thurs., May 8, at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. UNI will square off with the Missouri State Bears at 11:05 a.m. at Marian Kneer Stadium in Normal, Ill.
