OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Creighton Bluejays on Friday at the Hanscom Tennis Center.
UNI (9-7 overall) fell behind 1-0 as Creighton (8-6 overall) was able to secure the doubles point with an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles. UNI's No. 2 doubles duo of Elvira Lopez and Astrid Santos improved to 12-2 on the year with an 8-6 win over Creighton's Analese Snyder and Amanda Noonan.
"We got down early in all three of the doubles matches and could not complete the comeback," UNI head coach Daniel Finn said. "Bottom line is that we showed up late to the party. You can't expect to start competing 20 minutes into a match and expect to win. Give credit to Creighton. They came out and played a heck of a match and gave us nothing free today."
The Panthers were able to triumph at No. 4 singles (Astrid Santos), No. 5 singles (Krissy Lankelma) and at No. 6 singles (Sydney Wolfe).
With the dual tied at 3-3, it came down to a third-set match at No. 3 singles between UNI's Elvira Lopez and Creighton's Katherine Nelsen. Nelsen was able to put away Lopez in the third set, 6-4, to take the match for the Bluejays.
"Regardless we still hard our chances to comeback and grab ahold of momentum, but we just didn't execute in the ways we had been doing that," Finn said. "We will regroup and be fine. Sunday is another day and we have a big one at Drake to start the conference play."
UNI will take on the Drake Bulldogs on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Des Moines. It will be the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both squads.
