UNI Splits Weekend; Falls to Evansville, 59-50

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell to the Evansville Purple Aces, 59-50 today inside the Ford Center. UNI is now 11-11 overall and 7-4 in MVC play.
Four of the five starters for UNI finished in double figures with Hannah Schonhardt, Brooke Brown, Stephanie Davison and Jen Keitel all scoring 11 points each. Schonhardt notched a double-double also grabbing 11 boards.
UNI took a quick 5-0 start in the first half after Brooke Brown drained a three-pointer to open the game, but Evansville was able to hit a three-pointer of their own at the 17:29 mark to make the score 5-3. Mallory Ladd then came out of the first media timeout to hit a three-pointer, giving the Purple Aces a 6-5 lead.
Evansville took a four-point lead with 10:37 left in the half, but Hannah Schonhardt and Jen Keitel battled under the basket for layups to tie the score 11-11 with 9:15 on the clock. The Purple Aces went on to score six unanswered points before Erin Dohnalek stopped the run with a cut to the basket for a layup to slice the Evansville lead to 17-13.
Evansville went on a 7-2 run to the end first half against UNI. The Panthers headed into the locker room down 24-15, staying scoreless for the final three minutes of the first half.
Schonhardt found herself in the lane for a layup under the basket to cut the Evansville lead to 28-21, but Sara Dickey hit a three-pointer on the next play to give Evansville a 10-point lead with 16:54 left in the game. Schonhardt continued to fight for position under the basket, converting on a turnaround floater to make the score 33-26 with 14:59 on the clock.
The Panthers were able to whittle away at the Evansville lead after hitting two unanswered baskets from Keitel and Schonhardt, making it just a five-point advantage. The Purple Aces were able to extend their lead to double-digits again, but Davison hit a needed trey with 9:10 remaining to make the score 40-31.
Keitel came up with a big steal on the defensive end and then converted on one of her free throws on the next play to put the Panthers within nine points with 6:31 left in the game. Brown cut the Evansville lead down to nine again after two free throws, but the Panthers eventually fell to the Purple Aces, 59-50.

Jen Keitel tied her career-high in assists with five. She also finished with five Indiana State on Jan. 6, 2013.
Hannah Schonhardt finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 boards and 11 points.
