
UNI Picks up Season Sweep Over SIU, Wins 78-48

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Northern Iowa picked up the season sweep against the Southern Illinois Thursday night, defeating the Salukis 78-48. The Panthers are now 11-10 overall and 7-3 in MVC play.
The Panthers were led by Jen Keitel with the sophomore scoring 19 points and grabbing six boards. Brooke Brown added 17 points and nine rebounds, just one shy of reaching a double-double. Hannah Schonhardt was the third Panther in double figures, finished with 10 points and five rebounds.
UNI opened the game on a 7-0 run, holding the Salukis scoreless for the first minute and a half of the game. The Panthers extended it to a 9-2 run and then took a 14-5 lead heading into the first media timeout, allowing only two made baskets from SIU by the 15:18 mark in the first half.
Brown reached double figures in just the first half after knocking down her second three-pointer of the game to give UNI a 27-11 lead on Southern Illinois with 9:17 on the clock. Brown continued her strong first half presence with 4:51 on the clock when she was fed the ball in the lane by Keitel for a layup and a foul, converting on her free throw to make the score 33-15.
Southern Illinois was able to cut the UNI lead to 37-25, sending the Panthers into halftime with a 12 point lead. It marked the second game this season that the Panthers have held the Salukis to 25 points or less at half.
UNI started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers from Brittni Donaldson and Schonhardt to pick up six quick points and take a 43-25 lead. The Panthers then took a 20-point lead after Keitel and Stephanie Davison both scored uncontested layups to make the score 47-27 with 16:38 left in the game.
UNI held the Salukis to just 12 points in the first ten minutes of the second half while UNI took a 66-37 lead at the 9:24 mark after Amber Sorenson hit a trey. The Panthers continued to put the pressure on SIU, extending its lead to 30 points, to pick up their seventh victory in conference play.
Post-Game Notes vs. Southern Illinois
UNI has outscored the Salukis 79-48 in the first half in both contests this season. The Panthers have been able to hold SIU to 25 points or less in the first half in both games.
Brooke Brown finished with 17 points against Southern Illinois, marking the second game in a row and third in the last four that she has reached double-digits.
Jen Keitel scored in double figures for the fifth game in a row and 12th time this season. She finished with 19 points against the Salukis. In the last five games, Keitel has been averaging 16.6 points.
Hannah Schonhardt finished with 10 points against SIU, marking the second game in a row and the fourth in the last five games she has reached double digits.
UNI has scored 70 or more points seven times this season. The Panthers are also 7-0 this season when scoring 70 or more points.
