BUFFALO, N.Y. – UNI wrestlers buried Buffalo after the first six matches to stay perfect in duals on Saturday.
No. 10 UNI took down Buffalo, 32-6 and improved to 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference and 4-0 in duals.
Three wrestlers stepped into the dual lineup for the first time this season, and two came out with wins. The Panthers won eight of the 10 matches against the Bulls.
Five Panthers earned bonus points in their matches: No. 7 Dylan Peters, No. 2 Joe Colon, Zach Witte, No. 17 Cody Caldwell and Blaize Cabell.
No. 7 Dylan Peters (125 pounds) earned another fall to his resume, pinning Mike Soria in 1 minute, 30 seconds. Peters (18-4) has earned 13 of his 18 wins by fall and remains undefeated in duals.
No. 2 Joe Colon continued his dominance at 133 pounds with a 15-2 technical fall after 6 minutes against Buffalo's Justin Farmer. Colon has the highest winning percentage on the team this season. He improves to 18-1 and leads the team with six tech falls.
Levi Wolfensperger moved up a weight class from his usual spot at 133 pounds. He earned his first takedown of the match two minutes into the first period and amassed 54 seconds in riding time. An escape near the end of the second tied up the score with Buffalo's Nick Flannery, but Wolfensperger had enough time to earn a point for riding time. Flannery countered Wolfensperger's third period escape with a takedown for the lead, 4-3. Just as Flannery was turning him, Wolfensperger wiggled out and earned the reversal to regain the lead and win 6-4, with riding time.
Gunnar Wolfensperger kept things going for the Panthers, allowing Ryan Todora to earn just one point with an escape. Gunnar Wolfensperger led 4-1 in the third period and went on to win 7-1.
Zach Witte got a takedown early the first, but an escape kept the score close with Wally Maziarz through the first period. Witte got an escape off the start in the second, and Buffalo was warned for stalling. Witte earned a takedown and two near fall points to extend his lead, 7-1. Maziarz escaped in the third, but Witte got another takedown and was awarded riding time to win by major decision, 10-2.
Cooper Moore's first-period takedown was the only scoring in the first. Moore extended his lead over Tyler Rill in the second with near fall points. Rill's attempts at an escape failed, and Moore earned enough for riding time. Moore went on to win by decision, 7-1.
Cody Caldwell came out tough with an early takedown and three near fall points. Another turn for three near fall points put Caldwell up over Rrok Ndojak, 8-0, and already had earned enough for riding time. Ndojak earned his first point off an escape, but Caldwell continued to lead 8-1 after the second period. Caldwell got two more points for a reversal and won the match with riding time, 11-1.
Tony Lock was the first Bull to earn the first points in a match. Lock got two points off a takedown over Kyle Lux and then earned three near fall points to lead 5-0. Lux earned his first points off an escape with about 30 seconds left in the first period. Another escape and takedown pulled Lux within one point, 5-4. Lux was unable to keep Lock down and erase riding time in the third. Lock went on to win, 9-5.
Basil Minto took the lead with a takedown, but Angelo Malvestuto got an escape to keep the score close at 2-1 after the first. Minto was called for stalling, but Minto's escape gave him the 3-2 lead after the second. Malvestuto's earned a reversal in the last 30 seconds and went on to win 6-4.
Blaize Cabell had a series of takedowns and earned near fall points to take a dominating 9-2 lead over James Benjamin in the first. He continued his attack with an escape and takedown in the second to go up 11-2. Another escape and takedown by Benjamin couldn't outdo Cabell's offensive attacks. Cabell went on to win 14-6.
