FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Northern Iowa softball team split a pair of games this afternoon in day two action of the University of Arkansas Woo Pig Classic. The Panthers opened up the day with a 2-1 victory over the Raiders of Wright State University and wrapped up the action falling to the Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas, 17-1 in five innings.
UNI (6-13 overall) rallied for a 2-1 win over Wright State. WSU scored in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. But UNI was able to come back and score single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to score the one-run victory.
Jamie Fisher returned to the circle following Friday night's loss to Arkansas looking to get the Panthers off to a fast start. Fisher (3-8), did just that keeping the defense looking calm and collective by holding the Raiders to just one run. Fisher pitched a complete game three-hitter and struck out two.
At the plate, UNI was slow to get into a rhythm offensively with the bats. Powerless to find their way around the bases for a score in the first five innings, the Panthers collected runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Panthers final offensive spark came in the top of the seventh after freshmen Micalla Rettinger drew a walk. Gina Brown laid down the sacrifice bunt to advance Rettinger to second. Following a defensive error from a Melissa Walls fly ball to right field, Rettinger was able to score the go ahead run giving the Panthers the 2-1 advantage.
In game two on the night UNI was defeated by Arkansas in five innings, 17-1.
Offensively the Panthers were limited to just one run off Razorback pitcher Chelsea Cohen. Connecting for a double up the middle, Nicole Fisher got the bats going for UNI in the top of the second inning. Micalla Rettinger followed up with a single to center allowing Fisher to advance for the Panthers lone run on the night.
With the loss UNI will take on Wright State tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
