
Win Over Loyola Gives UNI a Share of the MVC Regular Season Championship

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated the Loyola Ramblers 3-2 on Saturday night in the McLeod Center. With this win, the Panthers tied with Wichita State for the Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship. UNI will also have the No. 2 seed in the MVC Volleyball Championship next week in Wichita, Kan.
Shelby Kintzel led the Panthers with 17 kills and six blocks. Kinsey Caldwell recorded 49 assists and Amie Held tallied a career high 29 digs.
With the score tied at 6-6 in the first set, a kill by Kinsey Caldwell started a 3-0 run for the Panthers to give them the 9-6 lead. Loyola fought their way to tie the set at 11-11. A kill by the Ramblers in the next play started a 5-0 run to give them the 16-11 lead. The Panthers brought it back to within three at 24-21, but could not get any closer. Loyola won the first set 25-21.
UNI turned the momentum around in the second set and took the early 7-2 lead. Kills by Eryca Hingtgen, Shelby Kintzel, Macy Ubben and Haley Wandrey helped the Panthers to increase their lead to six at 13-7. UNI held onto the lead throughout the remainder of the set and won it 25-16 to tie the match at 1-1.
Loyola took the 10-6 lead early on in the third set. An attack error by the Ramblers sparked a 6-2 run by UNI to help them tie the set at 12-12. A kill by Ubben in the next play gave them the 13-12 lead, but Loyola answered with a kill in the next to tie it up at 13-13. The score went back and forth and came, and the set came down to the end when it was tied at 23-23. A kill by Loyola followed by an attack error by UNI gave the Ramblers the 25-23 set win and 2-1 match lead.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the fourth set. UNI went on increase their lead to eight at 20-12 over Loyola. The Ramblers brought the set back to within five at 22-17 but that was as close as they got. UNI won the set 25-17 to force a fifth set in the match.
UNI had the 8-5 advantage in the fifth set, but Loyola came back to tie it at 8-8. The set went back and forth until it was tied again at 14-14. A block by Caldwell and Shelby Kintzel followed by an attack error by Loyola gave UNI the 16-14 set win and the 3-2 match victory.
UNI will have the No. 2 seed entering the MVC Volleyball Championship next week. They will play the winner of Southern Illinois vs. Bradley at 5 p.m. Friday.
