UNI Falls To Southern Illinois in MVC Semifinals

WICHITA, Kansas- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team fell to Southern Illinois 3-1 in the semifinals of the MVC Championships Friday night in Wichita.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 13 kills and 17 digs, and Courtney Kintzel had a .323 hitting percentage and five blocks. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 40 assists for UNI.
The score was tied 6-6 in the first set when a kill by Kinsey Caldwell, followed by a block from Leigh Pudwill gave UNI the 8-6 lead. A service error by the Panthers started a 4-0 Southern Illinois run to help them take the 10-8 lead. The Salukis increased their lead to eight over the Panthers at 18-10. A kill by Shelby Kintzel in the next play helped UNI go on a 7-2 run to bring it to within three at 20-17. The Panthers could not catch Southern Illinois though and fell to the Salukis 25-21 in the first set.
Southern Illinois got out an early 9-6 lead in the second set. A service error by the Salukis and a kill from Eryca Hingtgen brought UNI back to within one at 9-8. SIU took off and went on a 6-2 run to take the 15-10 lead in the set. A kill by Leigh Pudwill in the next play sparked a 6-0 run for the Panthers to give them the 16-15 lead. A service error by UNI in the next set allowed SIU to tie it at 16-16. The Salukis went on a 9-4 run after that to earn the 25-20 set win and 2-0 match lead.
With the score tied at 7-7 in the third set, an attack error by SIU started a 4-0 run for the Panthers to give them the 11-7 lead in the set. Two service aces and kills from Courtney Kintzel and Hingtgen helped UNI increase their lead to 16-9. Southern Illinois fought to bring it back to within three at 19-16 but could not catch the Panthers as UNI went on to win the set 25-18.
SIU took the early 10-7 lead in the fourth set. UNI fought and brought the score back to within two at 20-18. This was as close as the Panthers got to SIU as the Salukis went on to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.
