UNI Sweeps Drake to Take First Outright in the MVC

DES MOINES, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team swept the Drake Bulldogs 3-0 Saturday night in Des Moines. Wichita State fell to Southern Illinois tonight, so the Panthers are now first outright in the MVC.
Courtney Kintzel led the Panthers with 11 kills and a .409 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell recorded 34 assists, and Amie Held tallied 19 digs for the Panthers.
With the score tied 12-12 in the first set, a kill by Drake gave them the 13-12 lead, but the Panthers answered with a kill by Macy Ubben to tie it at 13-13. Back-to-back points by Drake allowed them to take the 15-13 lead, but Ubben answered that with back-to-back kills to tie it again at 15-15. The set went back and forth until the score was tied at 19-19. A kill by Kayla Haneline sparked a 6-1 run by the Panthers and helped them win the set 25-20.
UNI jumped out to an early 11-7 lead in the second set. Drake came back and tied the set at 11-11. A kill by Haneline in the next play sparked a 4-0 run to give the Panthers the 15-11 lead. UNI took control of the rest of the set and won it 25-17 to take the 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the Panthers took control early on. UNI had the 12-9 lead at the first timeout of the set. A block by Kinsey Caldwell and Courtney Kintzel in the next play started a 6-3 run to increase the Panthers' lead to eight at 18-12. UNI held the lead the rest of the set to win it 25-17 and take the 3-0 match victory.
The Panthers return to the McLeod Center on Friday when they host Southern Illinois at 7 p.m.
