
UNI Falls to Southern Illinois, 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team fell to the Southern Illinois Salukis 3-1 on Friday night in the McLeod Center. The Panthers are now 10-3 in the MVC while SIU is 9-5.
Courtney Kintzel led the Panthers with 15 kills and a .438 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 42 assists and Macy Ubben recorded 14 digs for UNI.
The score was tied 10-10 in the first set when back-to-back points from SIU gave them the 12-10 lead. Back-to-back kills from Shelby Kintzel and Macy Ubben helped the Panthers tie the score back up at 13-13. The score went back and forth until it was tied 17-17. An attack error by UNI and a kill by SIU gave the Salukis the 20-18 lead. Southern Illinois held the lead the rest of the set and won it 25-21.
UNI turned the momentum around in the second set and took the early 11-5 lead. Southern Illinois slowly started to come back and eventually brought it to within one at 19-18. A kill by Courtney Kintzel in the next play started a 3-0 UNI to increase their lead to 22-18. The Panthers held on and won the set 25-21 to tie the match at 1-1.
At the first timeout of the third set, the Panthers had the 7-3 lead over the Salukis. Kills by the Kintzel sisters helped UNI go on a 8-5 run to increase their lead to seven at 15-8. Southern Illinois slowly started to catch up with the Panthers and eventually tied the set at 24-24. An attack error by SIU gave the Panthers the 25-24 lead, but a kill by the Salukis in the next play helped them tie it at 25-25. An attack error by the Panthers in the next play and a kill by SIU gave the Salukis the 27-25 set win and the 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, the score was tied at 7-7 when a kill by Southern Illinois started a 3-0 run to give them the 9-7 lead. Kills by Kinsey Caldwell, Eryca Hingtgen and Leigh Pudwill helped the Panthers bring the score back to within one at 14-13. This was as close as UNI got though in the set as SIU went on to win it 25-17 to take the 3-1 match victory.
The Panthers will return to the court tomorrow night when they take on Evansville in the McLeod Center at 7:00.
