CHICAGO, Illinois - The UNI women's soccer team traveled to the Windy City this weekend for a Saturday night showdown against the Loyola Ramblers. A trip to the conference tournament was on the line for both teams.
The Ramblers began establishing the momentum early on. In the 16th minute Tricia Stonebraker tested Panthers goalkeeper Nicole Postel for a tough save. Loyola kept the momentum by firing three shots in five minutes - one being on goal for Postel's second save of the match.
Shortly after the barrage of shots the Ramblers would get on the board when Hailey Merril found the net off an assist from Tricia Stonebraker. UNI quickly recovered for two shot attempts before the end of the half. Maggie Riley's 41st minute shot went just high. Junior Charlotte Jones nearly beat Ramblers goalkeeper Monica Gonyo with a shot on net in the 43rd minute but Loyola would take their 1-0 lead into the half.
Loyola's defense would continue into the second period only allowing the Panthers two shots. Sophomore defender Sarah McHugh got free for a shot on goal during the 65th minute. Twenty minutes later in the 85th Charlotte Jones would once again have a shot but her header went just wide to the right.
Loyola kicked three corners and totalled seven shot attempts in the 1-0 win. The Panthers attempted four corner kicks and were called for offsides once.
