UNI Starts Second Half of MVC Play with Win Over Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.- The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team beat the Missouri State Bears 3-1 on Friday night in Springfield. UNI is now tied for second place in the MVC with Illinois State. The Panthers have now had 35 consecutive seasons with a .500 or above winning percentage.
Macy Ubben led the Panthers with 18 kills and a .370 hitting percentage. Kinsey Caldwell tallied 47 assists and 13 digs for the Panthers.
With the score tied 9-9 in the first set, a kill by Courtney Kintzel and then a block by Eryca Hingtgen and Kintzel helped the Panthers go up 11-9. Back-to-back points by Missouri State allowed them to tie the set back up at 11-11. The score went back and forth again and was tied again at 12-12. A kill by Courtney Kintzel started a 3-0 run to give UNI the 15-12 lead. The Panthers held onto the lead throughout the rest of the set and won it 25-21.
The score was tied 10-10 in the second set when a UNI service error gave Missouri State the 11-10 lead. A kill by Eryca Hingtgen in the next play helped the Panthers tie it again at 11-11. The set went back and forth until the score was tied at 15-15. Back-to-back kills from the Bears gave them the 17-15 lead. Missouri State held the lead through the set and won it 25-20 to tie the match at 1-1.
Missouri State jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the third set. The Bears increased their lead to nine, 19-10. A kill by Kinsey Caldwell in the next play sparked an incredible 13-4 run by the Panthers to help them comeback and tie the set 23-23. An attack error by MSU gave UNI the 24-23 lead but an attack error by the Panthers in the play to it up at 24-24. The score was tied again at 25-25 when back-to-back kills by Macy Ubben and Kinsey Caldwell gave them the 27-25 set win and 2-1 match lead.
The start of the fourth set was close, but UNI soon jumped out to the 13-10 lead. A kill by Ubben in the started a 3-0 run by the Panthers to give them the 16-10 lead. UNI dominated the remainder of the set and won it 25-16 to get the 3-1 match victory.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow night when they take on Wichita State at 7:00 at the Charles Koch Arena
