
UNI Defeats Indiana State, 3-1

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team defeated the Indiana State Sycamores 3-1 on Saturday night in the McLeod Center. The Panthers are now 7-2 in MVC play while Indiana State drops to 2-7 in the conference.
Shelby Kintzel led the Panthers with 16 kills and a .412 hitting percentage. Kinsey Cadlwell tallied 41 assists and Amie Held recorded 21 digs.
With the score tied 9-9 in the first set, kills by Eryca Hingtgen and Courtney Kintzel gave the Panthers the 11-9 lead. Indiana State then answered with a kill and a block to tie it up at 11-11. The score went back and forth and was tied at 13-13 when a kill by Macy Ubben in the next play sparked a 3-0 UNI run to give them the 16-13 lead. Indiana State slowly battled back to tie the set at the very end at 24-24. Back-to-back kills from the Sycamores gave them the 26-24 set win.
UNI brought the momentum back and jumped out to an early 9-5 lead in the second set. Kills by Kinsey Caldwell, Courtney and Shelby Kintzel, and Leigh Pudwill helped the Panthers go on a 6-4 run to increase their lead to 15-9. UNI held the lead throughout the rest of the set to win it 25-19 and tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the score was tied at 7-7 when a block by Ubben started a 3-0 run by the Panthers to give them the 10-7 lead. The Panthers increased their lead to four, with help from kills by Courtney and Shelby Kintzel and Ubben, to make it 14-10. Indiana State brought it back to within two at 20-18, but that was as close as the Sycamores got. UNI won the set 25-20 to take the 2-1 match lead.
Indiana State took the early 7-2 lead in the fourth set. Kills by three different Panthers helped them go on an 8-3 comeback run to tie the set at 10-10. Back-to-back kills from Caldwell and Hingtgen gave UNI the 12-10 lead. Indiana State answered with two points to tie it at 12-12. A kill by Courtney Kintzel in the next play sparked a 3-0 run by UNI to give them the 15-12 lead. The Panthers held a slim lead throughout the rest of the set but pulled out the 25-22 set win to get the 3-1 match victory.
UNI will travel to Missouri State on Friday to take on the Bears at 7 p.m.
