Panthers Use Extra Time to Defeat NDSU

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team topped the North Dakota State Bison on Friday night in extra time, 2-1.
The Panthers opened the scoring in the eighth minute when junior Claire Clark advanced the ball up the right side of the box. Clark then hit a pass to the middle of the box and found sophomore Shauna Happel who beat the Bison goalkeeper, burying the ball in the left side of the net for her first score of the season.
The Bison answered in the 55th minute when Anisha Kinnarath found Steph Jacobson in the box. Jacobson headed the ball into the left corner to knot the score at one.
The two teams played scoreless soccer until the 106th minute when sophomore Charlotte Jones blasted a shot from 28 yards out and beat the Bison goalkeeper, sealing the victory for the Panthers.
Jones led the Panther offensive attack, firing three of her five shots on goal in the match. Freshman Sarah McHugh finished the game with three shots, junior Sam Copley put two shots on goal, senior Kiki McClellan tallied two shots, while Happel, sophomore Caitlyn Fuller, and freshmen Katie Witt and Maggie Riley were each credited with a shot on goal on the night.
UNI outshot the Bison 16 to eight including an advantage of nine to four in shots on goal. The Panthers held a staggering advantage in corner kicks, five to one.
Junior goalkeeper Erin Zaideman played all 106 minutes for UNI, turning away three Bison shots while allowing one goal.
UNI (4-6-0) will be back in action on Sun., Sept. 16, when they face off with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Kickoff for the match is set for 1:00 p.m.
