UNI Wrestler Loder Leads Panthers at Cliff Keen

LAS VEGAS - University of Northern Iowa wrestler Ryan Loder made a strong debut for the Panthers at the Cliff Keen Invitational with one major decision, a technical fall and a pin.
After the first day of competition at the Cliff Keen, UNI is in 11th place over 14th-ranked Michigan and Kent State, which is ranked 23rd in the nation. The final day of competition will begin tomorrow morning.
"There are some things we have to do better to get them ready," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We need to find a way to break through. We need to turn around those tight matches. We have time to figure that out. Our guys are competing hard."
Ryan Loder, a junior, made his season debut with three big wins in the 184-pound weight class. He beat Ophir Bernstein of Brown with a major decision, scoring 10-0. He earned a technical fall over Paul Head of California Baptist, winning 19-0. He finished the night by pinning seventh-seed Craig Scott of Cornell in 2:35.
"It's always good to have him back," said Schwab. "He looks good so far. He has scored a lot of points and he just has to keep it rolling. That's what he has done for the past years. I'm looking forward to seeing him compete tomorrow."
Redshirt freshmen Tanner Hiatt hard a strong start to the tournament by pinning Jake Briggs of CSU Bakersfield in 1:36. He followed it up by beating last year's 149-pound champion Eric Grajales of Michigan in a 13-6 decision. Grajales was seeded third in this tournament.
"We are expecting that. He is capable of that. It's a good win to beat someone seeded that high," said Schwab. "The good thing is he kept building and scoring points and attacking. He got dinged up, so we will see if he wrestles tomorrow."
Hiatt was pinned in his third match by Cam Tessari of Ohio State, who is seeded sixth in the tournament.
Levi Wolfensperger's undefeated season streak ended with a loss to Logan Stieber of Ohio State, who is ranked first in the nation at 133 pounds. However, Wolfensperger had a strong start to the day with a win by major decision and tech fall. He beat Thomas Kelliher of Wisconsin 14-4. Wolfensperger faced Kelliher last week in a dual tournament in Madison, Wis., and won 6-4. He won 18-3 over Esteban Gomez-Rivera of American. Wolfensperger was seeded eighth for this tournament.
Fifth-seeded David Bonin won both of his early matches in the 157-pound weight class today by decisions. He went 9-6 over Charles York of Wisconsin and 6-1 over Brian Harvey of Army. He lost 3-1 in overtime to Gabe Martinez of the United States Air Force.
"He just needs to finish a few shots. We need to figure out a way to put his opponents down. He's going to have some tough matches ahead," said Schwab.
Cody Caldwell, a redshirt freshman, entered the tournament ranked seventh. He lost his first match 7-5 to Magi Frazier of San Francisco State, but came back to win the next three matches. He beat Giuseppi Lanzi of Brown, 10-5, and Kyle Sweedman of North Idaho College 11-3. He finished the night with a 9-2 decision over Cameron Croy of Harvard.
"He looked good tonight. He was very aggressive and decisive. He had the best match of the tournament in the night session," Schwab said.
Joey Lazor won three out of four of his matches at 141. He got a tech fall against Carter McElhany of United States Air Force (16-1) and beat McCade Ford of Wyoming 6-4. He came back in the evening session to beat John Boyle of American 6-2.
Cody Krumwiede is 1-2 for the day in the 285-pound weight class. He beat Keith Witt of Kent State, 7-1, before falling to Blake Herrin of American and Evan Knutson of North Dakota State University.
A.J. McBroom (197 pounds) and Jarrett Jensen (165 pounds) were not able to get a win today.
Cliff Keen, the tournament's namesake was a wrestler at Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) University and then went onto coach the wrestling team at the University of Michigan. As a student-athlete, Keen was a national champion. As a coach, he saw 68 of his wrestlers earn All-American status. He is a 1976 inductee into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Keen died in 1991 at the age of 90.
