CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball
team set a home attendance record in the McLeod Center as 4,077 fans
came out to watch the Panthers take on the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa scored a
78-74 victory over UNI.
Iowa (3-1 overall) used a 23-foot 3-pointer with 29.8 seconds left form Kamille Wahlin to retake the lead and give the Hawkeyes a 76-74 advantage. UNI had a chance to win the game on the following possession but Katelyn Oney's 3-pointer missed and the Panthers were forced to foul Iowa's Jaime Printy. Printy drained both free throws with 14.4 seconds left to clinch the win.
UNI (2-1 overall) trailed by as many 14 points in the second half before rallying to take the lead on a pair of free throws from Oney with 41.2 seconds left in the game. UNI was down 67-55 with 6:39 to go following two free throw makes from Iowa's Samantha Logic. But the Panthers refused to fade and used a defensive switch to key the comeback.
"I thought our extended 2-3 zone bothered them late," UNI head coach Tanya Warren said. "Morgan Johnson is hard to battle 1-on-1, so I'd rather have them shoot a 23-footer."
UNI went on a 19-6 run before Wahlin's triple in the final minute.
Oney posted 20 points on 6-of-15 shooting, including 4-of-12 from 3-point land. K.K. Armstrong netted 19 points and Rachel Madrigal tossed in 16 points. Amber Kirschbaum also reached double figures in scoring with 10 points.
Iowa's Morgan Johnson scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Jaime Printy added 18 points.
UNI will travel to Los Angeles, Calif., to take part in the Loyola Marymount Tournament. UNI will play Wyoming on Fri., Nov. 25, at 5 p.m. UNI will then either play Loyola Marymount or Youngstown State on Sat., Nov. 26.
NOTES: The previous attendance mark for women's basketball in the McLeod Center was 2,874 vs. Iowa State (Nov. 20, 2006 - first game in the McLeod Center) ... Oney's 20 points was one off of her career high ... UNI drained 16-of-17 free throws ... UNI tallied 11 steals vs. the Hawkeyes.
