No. 16 Nebraska Slips Past Panthers, 18-15

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa's upset fell just short Sunday as No. 16 Nebraska picked up a win in the final match of the dual to slip past the Panthers 18-15 in the West Gym. UNI held a 15-14 lead heading into the final match before Nebraska scored a major decision win to take the dual.

UNI picked up wins from Caleb Flores (125 lbs.), Joey Lazor (141 lbs.), Brett Robbins (149 lbs.), David Bonin (157 lbs.) and Ryan Loder (184 lbs.).

Starting the match at the heavyweight slot, Nebraska's Tucker Lane won the battle of the ranked heavyweights, topping Christian Brantley 2-0. Lane was ranked No. 10 heading into the match while Brantley held down the No. 16 spot.

Flores put the Panthers on the board in the next match, scoring a 2-1 decision over Nebraska's David Klingsheim. Down 1-0 with under a minute remaining in the match, Flores scored a takedown with 0:36 seconds remaining to pick up the win and knot the score at 3-3.

Nebraska took a 6-3 lead after Ridge Kiley secured a 3-2 win over Ryan Jauch.

In a high scoring dual at 141 pounds, Lazor came out on top, scoring a 17-13 decision over NU's Mike Koehnlein to tie the team score 6-6.

Robbins gave the Panthers a three point lead at 149 pounds, scoring a 6-2 decision over Ross Grande. Bonin added to the Panther lead with a 6-1 decision over Tyler Koehn at 157 pounds.

No. 1-ranked Jordan Burroughs picked up a technical fall win at 165 points to then pull the Huskers within one at 12-11 heading into the 174 pound match.

Caleb Kolb gave Nebraska a two-point lead at 174 pounds after a 5-3 decision over Brice Wolf.

In another battle of ranked opponents, No. 14-ranked Loder gave UNI a one point lead with a 5-0 win over No. 12-ranked Josh Ihnen.

In the final match, Nebraska picked up a major decision win at 197 pounds to give the Huskers the 18-14 dual win.

UNI (7-8, 2-0 WWC) returns to action next weekend, hosting Northern Illinois Jan. 28. Action from the West Gym is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
