Women's Basketball Holds On For 58-57 Win At Creighton

Erin Brocka finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Panthers. Amber Kirschbaum finished with nine points, and Lizzie Boeck tallied six points and six rebounds. Rachel Madrigal notched five points, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots for UNI.
Sam Schuett and Kellie Nelson each led Creighton (9-6, 3-1 MVC) with 14 points. Schuett also tallied 12 rebounds. Carli Tritz finished with six points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.
The Panthers made five of their first six shot attempts to build an early 11-2 lead. Creighton responded with a 7-0 run, to bring the score to 11-9.
Katelin Oney knocked down a layup, and Jacqui Kalin converted a pair of free throws to extend UNI's lead to 15-9 with 11:03 left in the half, but Creighton scored the game's next 10 points, to take a 19-15 lead at 7:17.
Amber Kirschbaum knocked down a layup and a short jumper to tie the game, 19-19 with 5:32 on the clock. Creighton's DaNae Moore scored the game's next four points, putting CU back in front, 23-19 with 3:27 left in the half.
Lizzie Boeck found Oney cutting to the basket for a layup, and Kalin converted a pair of free throws to tie the game at 23. Madrigal knocked away a Creighton pass near midcourt, and she took it in all the way for a layup. She was fouled in the process, and the free throw brought the score to 26-23. Kirschbaum hit a turnaround jumper at 1:05 to cap a 9-0 run by the Panthers and send UNI into the break in front, 28-23.
Kalin hit a jumper on UNI's first possession of the second half to extend the Panther run and the UNI lead to 30-23.
Leading 36-29, UNI got three straight layups, two of them coming off Madrigal steals, to go on a 6-0 run in a span of just over a minute and take a 42-39 lead with 13:55 to play.
Creighton answered with a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to cut the UNI lead back to seven, 42-35.
A three from Brocka returned UNI's lead to double digits, 45-35, but Kellie Nelson converted a three-point play and Sam Schuett hit a three to pull the Jays within four, 45-41 with 8:34 left.
Kalin ended the Bluejay run with a pair of free throws, and Brocka hit her third three of the game to put UNI in front 50-41 with 7:35 on the clock.
CU trimmed the UNI lead to six, but Kalin hit a three off an assist from Madrigal with 6:25 that brought the score to 54-45. Creighton got baskets from Nelson and Carli Tritz, and with 3:42 remaining Woodard hit a three to pull CU within two points, 54-52. Creighton came up with a steal six seconds later, and Schuett knocked down a layup as she was fouled. Her free throw gave CU a 55-54 lead with 3:28 on the clock.
Kalin hit a pair of free throws with 1:39 left, but Tritz answered with a basket with 1:16 on the clock to give Creighton the one-point edge.
UNI broke the Creighton press, and Kalin scored on the fast break to put the Panthers back in the lead, 58-57 with 1:05 remaining.
The Panthers came up with two defensive stops, including a defensive rebound from Brocka and a steal from Boeck with just four seconds left on the clock, to seal the win.
Both teams made 21 field goals, with the Panthers shooting 21-of-51 (41.2 percent) and the Bluejays shooting 21-of-61 (34.4 percent). The teams were also even from the free-throw line, with UNI converting 12-of-20 (60 percent) tries and the Jays knocking down 12-of-16 (75 percent). The difference came from behind the arc, where UNI finished 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) and Creighton was 3-of-19 (15.8 percent)
The Panthers turned Creighton's 17 turnovers into 21 points, and Creighton converted UNI's 12 turnovers into 15 points. CU held a 46-32 rebounding advantage.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Drake at 2 p.m.
