
Daigh's Grand Slam Pushes Panthers Past Nebraska, 5-3

LINCOLN, Neb. – The University of Northern Iowa softball team earned a 5-3 win at Nebraska Tuesday night at Bowlin Stadium, giving the Panthers their fifth straight victory.
Samantha Reimer and Eranne Daugharthy each finished with two hits for the Panthers (25-20). Mackenzie Daigh hit her second home run of the season, a grand slam in the fifth inning that gave the Panthers a lead they would never give up.
UNI outhit the Huskers (27-23), 8-3. Ashley Hagemann was charged with the loss after allowing five runs through 4.2 innings.
Jen Larsen gave up two hits and three runs through 5.0 innings to earn the win. Jaye Hutcheson recorded the final two outs to notch the save.
Neither team scored until the top of the fifth. Daugharthy led off the inning with a single, Sarah Bakey was hit by a pitch and Reimer drew a walk to load the bases. Kim Wachholder singled to put the Panthers on the board first and keep the bases loaded. Two batters later, Mackenzie Daigh hit a grand slam to right to give UNI a 5-0 advantage.
Nebraska used a hit, a pair of walks and a Panther error to tally three runs in the bottom half of the inning, cutting UNI's lead to 5-3.
UNI tallied a pair of singles in the top of the sixth, but Nebraska held the Panthers without another run.
The Huskers put two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Hutcheson retired the next two batters to end the game and seal the Panther win.
UNI returns to action on Wednesday when it plays at Iowa.
