Softball Earns Extra-Inning Win At Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa softball team escaped with an 8-7 eight-inning win over in-state foe Iowa Wednesday night at Pearl Field, extending the Panthers' win streak to six.
Kim Wachholder and Courtney Dunker each tallied two hits for the Panthers (26-20). Dunker hit her 12th home run of the season, a grand slam in the fifth inning. Hannah Borschel also connected on a home run for the Panthers. Eranne Daugharthy allowed two hits and one run through 2.2 innings of relief to earn the win for UNI.
Iowa (23-17) went on the board first, scoring a run in the bottom of the third.
Borschel tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the top of the fifth. Jen Larsen drew a walk, and Livi Abney hit an RBI double with two outs in the inning to give the Panthers their first lead, 2-1. Wachholder and Daugharthy each drew walks to load the bases, and Lindsey Callanan drew a walk to plate a run and keep the bases loaded. Dunker cleared the bases with a grand slam into center that gave the Panthers a 7-1 lead.
Iowa used three walks, a hit batter and three hits to tally five runs in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the UNI lead to 7-6.
The Panthers were held without a run in the top of the seventh. Iowa's Johnnie Dowling hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom half of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
The Panthers drew a pair of walks to lead off the top of the eighth. Wachholder hit a two-out single to score a run and give the Panthers a one-run edge, 8-7.
Daugharthy retired the Hawkeyes in order to secure the win for the Panthers.
Both teams tallied 10 hits. UNI drew eight walks in the win, while the Hawkeyes drew five. UNI stranded 10 runners, and Iowa left nine runners on base.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they open a three-game series at Southern Illinois with a doubleheader starting at noon.
