Bermel Two Strokes Back with Panthers in Seventh Place at MVC Championship

Hutchinson, Kan. -- The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team stands in seventh place after two rounds on the first day of competition at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship. UNI held third place after posting a 323 for the opening round, but slipped to seventh with a second-round 335. The Panthers' two-round total of 658 has them eight strokes out of sixth place and ten strokes out of fifth.
UNI was slated for fifth in the pre-championship poll of MVC head coaches.
Senior Kyle Bermel is in fifth place in the individual standings after carding a 78-76--154 for the first 36 holes. At 14-over par, Bermel is a mere two strokes behind leader Patrick Scheil of Southern Illinois.
Sophomore Matt Sargent posted an 82-83--165 and senior Tyler Johnson shot 80-89--169. Troy Hoffman totaled 171 and Jared Doerfler came in at 177 to round out UNI's competitors.
Wichita State leads the team race by one stroke over Southern Illinois, 624-625. Patrick Scheil of Southern Illinois shot 76-76--152 (+12) to top the individual leaderboard.
Play will conclude Tuesday with the final 18 holes. The first tee times are set for 8 a.m at Prairie Dunes Country Club.
