Bermel Captures All-MVC Honors, Panthers Take Eighth

Hutchinson, Kan. -- The University of Northern Iowa men's golf team took eighth place at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club on Tuesday. UNI posted its best team score of the tournament for the final round but slipped one spot in the standings from the first day of competition. Senior Kyle Bermel took fourth place overall to earn All-MVC honors.
UNI was picked to finish fifth in the pre-championship poll of league head coaches.
Bermel fired his best round of the tournament in the final round, carding a 74. His total of 78-76-74--228 was good enough for fourth place in the individual standings, just one stroke out of second and five strokes behind medalist Dustin Garza of Wichita State. The fourth-place finish was Bermel's highest of his three career MVC Championship appearances.
The top six finishers earned automatic all-conference honors, while four others were selected based on pre-championship play. Bermel becomes the first Panther to earn all-MVC recognition since Andy White and Jordan Weber both did in 2008.
Sophomore Matt Sargent was the second-best UNI finisher, taking a share of 30th place with an 82-83-81--246 card. Seniors Tyler Johnson and Troy Hoffman wrapped up their UNI careers in 35th and 38th place, respectively. Junior Jared Doerfler took 43rd place to complete the UNI contingent.
Johnson, Hoffman and Doerfler all posted rounds of 80 on Tuesday. Sargent shot 81.
Wichita State carded a third-round 298 to win its third MVC Men's Golf Championship in a row. The Shockers have now won nine of the past 12 MVC titles. Player of the Year Dustin Garza was medalist, shooting a three-round 78-75-70--223 to outdistance teammate Anders Engell (227) and Brad Reierson of Drake (227), who tied for second.
