CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa downed fellow Western Wrestling Conference foe Air Force 24-15 Sunday afternoon in the West Gym. The win marks the Panthers third in a row, and second consecutive WWC victory.
“Both teams fought very hard today, but I thought we were more aggressive as a whole” UNI head coach Brad Penrith said. “We worked hard throughout the dual and really battled for positions. It was nice to get seven of the 10 matches, but now we need to turn our focus to preparing for the West Regional.”
The match started at the 141-pound slot, where No. 15-ranked Cole VonOhlen scored a 9-3 decision over Charlie Ettelson.
At 149 pounds, Brett Robbins took an early 10-4 lead over Air Force's Gabe Martinez after the first period, as Robbins notched four takedowns in the first period. The second period was the exact opposite of the first, with the only score being an escape from Martinez. Robbins extended his lead again in the third period, notching his fifth takedown and picking up a riding time point to take the win, 13-6.
Tyson Reiner continued the winning for the Panthers at 157 pounds as he notched an 8-3 win over Alec Williams.
David Bonin picked up a win for the Panthers at 165 pounds as he secured a 9-4 decision over Joseph Stafford.
Jarion Beets extended the Panther lead to 15-3 win a pin over Air Force's Tyler French in 4:55 at the 174-pound slot.
Air Force then turned the table on the Panthers, registering a pin of their own at 184 pounds to pull within 15-9.
Dustin Bauman returned the momentum in favor of the Purple and Gold again, winning a tiebreaker over Neil Delaney. Bauman secured an escape with 19 seconds left in the tiebreaker to earn a 3-2 decision and extend the Panther lead to 18-9.
Christian Brantley also needed an extra period to pick up a win at the heavyweight slot, eventually outlasting Stephen Larson 3-1. After a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation, Brantley secured a takedown 17 seconds in the first sudden victory period to pick up the win.
At the 125-pound class Caleb Flores earned a 6-1 decision over Andrew Zwirlein to extend the Panther lead to 24-9.
Air Force earned a pin at the 133-pound slot, but it was too little to late and the Panthers earned the 24-15 dual win.
UNI (10-12, 4-3 WWC) will now head to the NCAA West Regional Championships in hopes of claiming their 25th straight West Regional title on March 6 in Brookings, S.D.
