
Beets Advances to Quarterfinals NCAA Wrestling Championships

Session I Bout-By-Bout Results
OMAHA, Neb. - The University of Northern Iowa's Jarion Beets advanced the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships Thursday evening in Omaha, Neb. Beets won three matches Thursday at 174 pounds and will now face No. 4-seeded Stephen Dwyer (Nebraska) Friday morning.
Trent Washington (149 lbs.), Tyson Reiner (157 lbs.) and Christian Brantley (285 lbs.) also remain alive in the consolation brackets, as each picked up a win in the wrestle-backs Thursday evening.
Second Round - Thursday Night
Beets secured an 8-6 decision over Michigan's Justin Zeerip to earn a place in the 174-pound quarterfinals Friday morning. Beets scored first, notching two takedowns in the first period to go up 4-2. Beets secured his third takedown in the second period, but allowed Zeerip two escapes to keep the score close at 6-4. However, Beets held strong and secured his fourth takedown of the match in the third period to claim the 8-6 win and advance to the quarterfinals.
Beets, making his first NCAA Championships appearance, will face Nebraska's Stephen Dwyer in the quarterfinals.
Wrestle-Backs - Thursday Night
Washington clinched an 8-3 win over Clarion's James Fleming at 149-pounds. Washington, an Omaha, Neb. native, scored six of his eight points in the first period of the match, notching two takedowns and a two point nearfall. After a scoreless second period from both wrestlers, Washington secured his third takedown to extend his lead to 8-3 and pick up his first win of the tournament. Washington will now face Pittsburgh's Eric Albright.
At 157 pounds Tyson Reiner also picked up a win, scoring a majority of his points in the first period. Reiner took down Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch three times in the first period alone, building a 6-2 lead. Neither wrestler managed to score in the second period, however, Deutsch scored a takedown to close the gap to 6-4, but Reiner escaped and held on for the 7-4 decision. Reiner will now face No. 10 seeded Shane Vernon (Oklahoma).
After falling behind 1-0 in the consolation round at 285 pounds, Christian Brantley knotted the score a 1-1 after a technical violation by Gardner-Webb's Dustin Porter. Brantley then secured a takedown late in the third period to earn the 3-1 win. Brantley will now face Navy's No. 12-seeded Scott Steele.
Preliminary Round - Thursday Morning
Beets scored his first career-win at the NCAA Championships with a 5-3 decision over Oklahoma's Jeff James in the preliminary round at 174 pounds. Beets scored two takedowns in the match, while not allowing James a takedown.
Beets earned his second win of the day, an upset of Minnesota's No. 5-seeded Scott Glasser, 14-7. Beets took an early command of the match, notching two takedowns. Beets recorded a takedown in each of the three periods, as well as two escapes while allowing just one late takedown for Glasser. Beets will now face Michigan's Justin Zeerip in the second round.
At 149 pounds, Trent Washington fell to No. 1-seeded Brent Metcalf 15-6. Washington will now take on Clarion's James Fleming.
Tyson Reiner fell 9-4 to Virgina's Dan Gonsor in the first round, 9-4. Reiner will now face Northern Illinois' Bryan Deutsch. Deutsch and Reiner met earlier this season, with Reiner registering a technical fall over Deutsch.
At 285 pounds, Christian Brantley came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision against Edinboro's Christopher Birchler. Birchler notched an escape in the second period to put the first points on the board and then a third-period takedown to secure the win. Brantley scored two points off two escapes in the third period. Brantley will now face Dustin Porter of Gardner-Webb.
