
Panthers Pull Away For 81-60 Win Over South Dakota State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - With the game tied at 46-46 with 12 minutes to play, the University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team pulled away for an 81-60 win over South Dakota State Saturday afternoon in the McLeod Center. Four Panthers scored in double digits on the way to the season-high 81 points. Jacqui Kalin led UNI (6-3) with 18 points, and Lizzie Boeck tallied 15. Katelin Oney added 12 points for the Panthers, and Rachel Madrigal was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, to finish with 10 points. Erin Brocka led the Panthers with seven rebounds and four assists, along with seven points. Kristin Rotert led SDSU (4-5) with 21 points and seven rebounds. The score was tied 10-10 early in the first half when the Panthers held SDSU without a field goal for more than five minutes and used a 14-1 run to build a 24-11 lead with 7:44 left in the period. The Panthers led by at least nine points until Rotert hit a layup with 3:09 left in the half that brought the score to 30-23. Amber Kirschbaum scored four straight points for the Panthers to extend the UNI lead to 34-23, but SDSU ended the half on an 8-2 run to bring the halftime score to 36-31 in favor of the Panthers. Boeck scored on a jumper to stretch UNI's lead back to seven, 38-31. The Jackrabbits scored the game's next seven points to tie the game, 38-38, with 17:47 left. Kalin and Rotert traded baskets to keep the game tied, and Ashley Eide made a pair of free throws with 15:37 to play that gave SDSU its first lead of the second half, 42-40. On UNI's ensuing possession, Oney knocked down a three from the right baseline to put the Panthers back in front, 43-42. Leah Dietel made a layup to put SDSU back in front by a point, but Oney drained a three from the left baseline to give the Panthers a 46-44 lead with 12:45 to play. Eide made a layup at 12:07 to tie the game for the fifth time, but the Panthers went on a 13-2 run to build a 59-48 lead with 7:46 remaining. The Panthers held on to a double-digit lead until a pair of free throws from Rotert brought the score to 60-51 with 6:36 to play. UNI scored the game's next five points to extend its lead to 65-51, and the Panthers led by at least 11 points the rest of the way. The Panthers shot 25-of-54 (46.3 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from three-point range. UNI shot 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from the floor in the second half, including 6-of-11 (54.5 percent) from behind the arc. The Panthers finished 23-of-27 (85.2 percent) from the free-throw line. SDSU shot 19-of-39 (48.7 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from three-point range. The Jackrabbits were 16-of-19 (84.2 percent) from the free-throw line. UNI held a 31-22 rebounding advantage. The Panthers held the Jackrabbits to one offensive rebound and no second-chance points. UNI converted SDSU's 26 turnovers into 36 points. The Panthers committed 17 turnovers, resulting in 12 points for SDSU. UNI returns to action on Dec. 18 when it hosts North Dakota at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
