
Volleyball Tops Creighton 3-1 to Win Ninth Straight

OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team escaped with a 3-1 win over Creighton in Missouri Valley Conference action Saturday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. UNI topped the Jays 25-23, 25-22, 22-25, and 28-26 to win its ninth straight match.
Shannon Aschoff and Michelle Burow each recorded 18 kills for the Panthers (11-2, 2-0 MVC), marking a career high for Burow. Bre Payton notched a triple-double, finishing with 42 assists, 21 digs and 12 kills, setting career bests for digs and kills in the process. Amy Braun tallied 13 kills in the match, and Krista DeGeest finished with five blocks. Aschoff and Burow each recorded four blocks in the match.

Neither team led by more than three in the first set until UNI scored five straight points to build a 19-12 advantage. Creighton (3-8, 1-1 MVC) responded with a seven-point rally that tied the set at 19-19. Creighton claimed a 23-22 lead, but the Panthers scored the final three points to win the set, 25-23.
Trailing 11-8, UNI responded to tie the second set, 12-12. UNI held at least a tie or the lead, building a 19-15 advantage. Creighton scored a pair of consecutive points to cut the UNI lead in half, 19-17, but the Panthers were able to hang on for a 25-22 win.
Leading the third set 12-11 the Panthers scored four straight points to stretch their lead to 16-11. Creighton answered with a four-point run, pulling back within a point, 16-15. UNI held at least a one-point lead until Creighton scored three straight to go in front, 19-18. An Aschoff kill ended the run and tied the set at 19-19, but Creighton scored to reclaim the lead, 20-19. Krista DeGeest notched a kill to knot the set at 20, but CU scored three straight points to build a 23-20 advantage. UNI scored back-to-back points to end the Creighton run and pull back within a point, 23-22. Creighton scored the next two points, however, taking the set, 25-22.
The fourth set stayed close throughout, and a Creighton kill brought the score to 23-23, the 15th tie of the set. A Bluejay attack error forced set point in favor of the Panthers, but CU scored consecutive points to take a 25-24 lead. UNI tied the set at 25, but CU had its second set point when it went up 26-25. The Panthers used kills from Braun, Payton and Burow to score the final three points of the set, winning the set 28-26 and taking the match.
The Panthers return to action on Friday when they host Southern Illinois at 7 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
