
UNI tops Southern Illinois 3-1 for 10th Straight Win

The University of Northern Iowa volleyball team won its 10th straight match when it topped previously undefeated Southern Illinois 3-1 in Missouri Valley Conference action Friday night in the McLeod Center. UNI won the match by scores of 23-25, 25-11, 25-11, 25-20.
Senior Shannon Aschoff led the Panthers (12-2, 3-0 MVC) with 15 kills, and freshman Amy Braun and sophomore Michelle Burow each added 12. Junior Beth Discher finished with 11 kills in the match. Sophomore setter Bre Payton matched a career high with 47 assists in the match, and junior libero Ellie Blankenship paced the Panthers with 31 digs. Freshman Krista DeGeest and Braun led UNI with four and three blocks, respectively. Braun also notched three service aces in the win.
UNI led or was tied for most of the first set, but Southern Illinois (11-1, 2-1 MVC) took the lead at 21-20. UNI took the next two points, claiming a 22-21 edge, but SIU scored three straight to take a 24-22 lead and force set point. The Panthers were able to fend off set point once, but SIU claimed the next point and the set, 25-23.
The Panthers roared out to an early 9-2 lead in the second set, and they never looked back. UNI led by at least six and as many as 16 on the way to the 25-11 win.
Leading 6-5 in the third set, UNI scored six straight points to stretch its advantage to 12-5. The Panthers led by at least five the rest of the way to the 25-11 set victory.
The Panthers used a five point run to build an 18-8 lead in the fourth set. The Salukis narrowed the gap to 24-20, but UNI was able to put the set away on a kill by Aschoff, winning 25-20.
The win extends UNI's streak to 10 straight, matching a win streak by the Panthers in 2007.
UNI will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Evansville at 7 p.m.
