Clark Takes MVC Decathlon Title, Scott Wins Long Jump Crown

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Mat Clark and Quentin Scott highlighted day two of the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships as Clark took the decathlon title and Scott captured the long jump crown. After the second day of competition, the Panther men sit in fourth place with 54 points after eight events. Southern Illinois and Indiana State sit tied for first in the men's race with 81 points. On the women's side, the Panthers also sit in fourth place, tallying 41 ½ points after eight events scored. Wichita State leads the way for the women with 81 ½ points.
Scott leaped a career-best 24-11 ¼ to take the MVC long jump crown, jumping over a foot farther than Illinois State's Chris Kirtz in second with a jump of 23-08 ¼. In addition to winning the conference title, Scott also hit a Midwest Regional qualifying mark.
The Panthers also picked up points in the long jump from Alvin Cole, Rozle Bucalo and Clark. Cole took fifth place with a career-best leap of 23-07 ¼. Bucalo finished sixth with a leap of 23-05 ¼. Clark took seventh place, leaping 22-11 ¼.
Prior to his seventh place high jump finish, two-time All-American Clark captured the first MVC decathlon title of his career, racking up a career-best 7,785 points. The senior took the crown in a decisive fashion, as he scored 828 points more than Wichita State's Justin Taylor, who finished second with 6,957 points. Clark's point total also broke Indiana State's Marks Field record of 7,092 previously set by UNI's Jason McCleary in 1993.
In the discus, Clark recorded the top toss in the field, recording a career-best 133-04 and earning 678 points. Clark took a commanding lead after shattering his previous career-best in the pole vault, clearing 16-02 ¾ and picking up 895 points. Clark recorded the farthest javelin toss in the field heaving 181-01 to pick up 666 points and extend his lead. The Ames, Iowa native wrapped-up the ten-event competition with the fastest 1500 meter time in the field, clocking in at 4:28.47.
Troy Bacon finished fourth in the decathlon, also racking up a career-best point total of 6,632 points. The freshman recorded the second-fastest 110 meter hurdle time, clocking in at 15.75 to pick up 761 points in the first event of the day. In the discus, Bacon recorded the fourth-best toss, heaving 105-06 to pick up 507 points. In the pole vault, Bacon cleared a season-best 14-11 to pick up 775 points. Bacon then heaved 142-09 in the javelin to gain 493 points and wrapped up the competition with a time of 5:00.94 in the 1500 meter run to secure his fourth place finish.
Tyler Dodd and Chris Kasel finished ninth and tenth, respectively with Dodd racking up 6,293 points and Kasel finishing with 5,857 points.
Ehi Oamen took runner-up honors in the high jump, clearing 6-10 ¾. Teammate Travis Leuer finished fifth with a jump of 6-08 ¾. Indiana State's Major Clay took the title, clearing 7-00 ½.
Lucas Cook finished in fourth place in the hammer throw, heaving 183-11. Southern Illinois' Joe Paradiso took the top spot, heaving 192-00.
Justin Romero took seventh place in the shot put, tossing 50-10 ¼.
In the 110 meter hurdles, both Wojciech Jurkowski and Greg Offerman qualified for the finals with Jurkowski clocking in a season-low 14.82, the fourth-fastest time. Offerman recorded the eighth-fastest preliminary time, crossing in a career-low 15.03.
Seven-time All-American Terrance Reid recorded the second-fastest 400 meter preliminary time, crossing in 46.68. Three-time All-American Ryan Grenko qualified third, finishing in 48.03.
In the 100 meter dash preliminary round, freshman Giorgio Giurdanella also qualified for the finals in a season-low time of 10.82.
In the 800 meter run, the Panthers recorded the top two qualifying times, with Mulder finishing in the top time (1:51.45) followed by Perkins with a time of 1:55.62.
In the 400 meter hurdles, Greg Offerman clocked in the fastest prelim time, crossing in 53.33. Cory Goos crossed in 53.67, the second-fastest prelim time, followed by Dennis Hammel in fourth (54.63).
Reid also clocked in the fastest 200 meter preliminary time, crossing in 21.18. Herring also qualified for the final round in the 200 meters, recording a season-low time of 21.53 to finish with the fourth-fastest prelim time.
WOMEN'S RESULTS
Junior Dani Stipe finished runner-up in the heptathlon, scoring a season-best 5,159 points and improving her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Stipe opened the day recorded farthest long jump in the field, leaping 18-03 ¼ to pick up 720 points. Stipe then recorded the farthest javelin toss in the field picking up 621 points with a heave of 123-03. The Carroll, Iowa native wrapped up the competition with a time of 2:29.17 in the 800 meter run to gain 703 points and secure her second place finish.
Stipe also tied for eighth place in the high jump, clearing 5-03.
Senior Alyssa Fischer took fifth place in the heptathlon, scoring a season-best 4,568 points. Fischer leaped 17-02 ¾ in the long jump to pick up 628 points. Fischer tossed a career-best 109-11 in the javelin to pick up 543 points. In the final event, Fischer clocked in at 2:40.41 to pick up another 568 points and secure fifth place.
Sarah Harms took second place in the shot put, tossing 48-05 ¼. Traci Harms also put a point on the board for the Panthers as well in the shot put, heaving a career-best 44-06 for eighth place.
Heather Kessler and Brittany Korell recorded career-best times in the 100 meter hurdles, with Hale and Kessler both crossing in 14.83 and Korell in 15.15. Despite the career-best marks, the Panthers did not qualify for the finals.
Michaela Brungardt qualified for the finals in the 400 meter dash, finishing in 58.18, the eighth fastest time.
Jamie Wieck recorded a season-best time in the 100 meter dash, crossing in 12.41, but failed to reach the final round.
Competition resumes tomorrow, with the hammer throw beginning at 9 a.m. Running events take off at 2 p.m. with the 4x100 meter relay.
