PANORA, Iowa - The University of Northern Iowa's women's golf team capped is season with a fourth-place finish at the 2009 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship being held at Lake Panorama National Resort.
Only a handful of players broke 80 on the final day, which was marred by cold weather and blistering winds.
"Today's conditions were very difficult but especially evident on holes seven through 12, so the teams that were able to play the front nine first had a tremendous advantage," Bermel said. "We benefited from playing the front nine first because the wind kind of died down when we got to 10, 11 and 12. I'm proud of our squad because we hung together throughout the entire weekend."
The Panthers were in a tight battle throughout the day with Missouri State and Indiana State for the fourth through sixth slots in the tournament. UNI entered the tournament as the sixth-place pick, but was able to improve two slots in the three rounds of play.
UNI's three-round total of 941 edged out Missouri State's total of 942 and Indiana State's 945.
The Panthers' Shanon Davis posted the low-round of the day for the squad as she tallied a 79 to jump into a tie for 22nd place overall. Davis birdied the par-3 second hole en route to a front-nine 39.
"Shanon had a great tournament, she really played well all weekend," Bermel said. "That was great for not playing in our top-five all season long."
Kim Weber was UNI's top finisher in the tournament as she tied for eighth overall. Weber birdied a pair of holes coming in on Sunday for a back-nine 37 after going out in 44.
Blair Bonner tied for 13th overall but she did not give up on her round as she birdied the par-4 17th, which eventually proved to be the difference in UNI earning the fourth spot outright.
"Blair shot an 84 but she played well down the stretch," Bermel said. "She had bogeyed six straight holes at that point but she still battled back and got a birdie on that hole as it played downwind."
Ann Arnason tied for 16th after shooting an 82 on Sunday. Arnason birdied the par-3 13th as she shot 39 on the backside.
Heather Frye shot her best round of the weekend on Sunday with an 83, which included a birdie on the par-5 second.
Illinois State's Stacey Miller captured the medalist honor at nine-over par with a three-round total of 225. Miller edged out Drake's Olivia Lansing by one shot after Lansing followed her second-round 69 with a third-round 82.
