
Panthers Edge Evansville in Overtime, 65-62

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team held Evansville scoreless through the first three minutes of overtime to hold on for a 65-62 win over the Aces Thursday night at Roberts Stadium. Nicole Clausen hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the extra period to secure the win for the Panthers.
Kim Wypiszynski led the Panthers (7-13, 5-5 MVC) with 16 points, and Lizzie Boeck finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Katelin Oney added 13 points for UNI.
Ashley Austin led the Purple Aces (9-12, 2-8 MVC) with 16 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Shannon Novosel scored 13 points to go with nine rebounds, and Amy Gallagher scored 13 points and collected eight boards.
A three from Kim Wypiszynski gave UNI a 20-13 lead at the 10-minute mark. The teams traded baskets twice, and at 7:19 Wypiszynski scored to give UNI a 24-17 advantage.
The Aces responded with a 6-0 run that cut UNI's lead to one, 24-23 with 4:42 left in the half.
Nicole Clausen found Wypiszynski open on the block at 1:55, and her layup ended a 5:30 scoring drought for UNI and gave the Panthers a 26-23 lead.
Katelin Oney answered a basket by Robyn Jennings to keep the Panther lead at three, 28-25 with 1:10 on the clock. Evanville's Amy Gallagher scored with 42 seconds left to pull the Aces back within one.
Lizzie Boeck scored with eight seconds left in the half to give UNI a three-point advantage, 30-27, but the sophomore was charged with a foul with just one second left on the clock to send Ashley Austin to the free throw line. She made both attempts to send the Aces into the break trailing 30-29.
Shannon Novosel scored at 16:51 to give the Aces their first lead of the game, 33-32. A free throw from Jordan Lewis put the Aces in front by a pair, but Wypiszynski tied the game at 34-34 with a layup at 15:55. Indy Uhlenhopp put UNI back in front by two with a mid-range jumper at 14:55.
The lead was short-lived, as Novosel scored to tie the game, and Lewis took a Panther turnover the length of the floor for a layup that gave Evansville a 38-36 lead with 14:10 remaining.
K.K. Armstrong tied the game for the fourth time with a pair of free throws at 13:05.
Novosel made one of two free throws to give the Aces a slight edge, but Boeck scored on a putback to give the Panthers a one-point lead, 40-39. She connected from behind the arc on the Panthers' next possession to give UNI a 43-39 lead with 10:46 to play.
Austin made her third three of the game at 9:02 to pull the Aces within one point, 43-42. Eva Benson scored, and Austin hit a jump shot from the left baseline to cap a 7-0 UE lead that put the Aces in front, 46-43.
Wypiszynski hit a 10-foot jump shot at 7:20 to end the Evansville run, but Benson scored on the block to keep Evansville's lead at three, 48-45 with 6:50 to play.
Oney and Clausen scored on back-to-back possessions to return the lead to UNI, 49-48. Boeck followed with a three to extend UNI's lead to 52-48 at 4:22. Erin Brocka drove into the lane and scored at 3:10 to cap a 9-0 run that gave UNI a 54-48 lead.
Benson scored to end the UNI run, but Wypiszynski found Brocka wide open on the right block for a basket that gave UNI a 56-50 advantage with 2:25 to play.
Gallagher scored as she was fouled, and her free throw cut UNI's lead in half, 56-53 with 1:12 on the clock. After UNI came up empty-handed on its next possession, Gallagher scored a layup to pull the Aces within one point, 56-55 with 36 seconds left.
The Aces elected to send Wypiszynski to the free-throw line. The junior hit the front end of the one-and-one, but her second rimmed out to give the Panthers a 57-55 lead with 14.2 seconds left.
The Panthers knocked the ball loose under the Evansville basket, and Wypiszynski was whistled for a foul during the scramble for the loose ball. Novosel connected on both free throws to tie the game with 3.1 seconds left.
UNI turned the ball over with .1 second left, and Evansville could not get off a shot to send the game into overtime.
Danielle Wubbens scooped up an errant Evansville pass, and Boeck was fouled on the fast break. She made both free throws to put UNI in front, 59-57. Oney hit a three from the right wing to extend the Panther advantage to 62-57 with 2:07 on the clock.
Novosel made one of two free throws with two minutes left to trim UNI's lead to four, 62-58. Novosel scored on a fast break to cut UNI's lead in half with a basket with 36 seconds left. Evansville opted to send Oney to the line with 25.3 seconds left. The freshman made one of two to give the Panthers a 63-60 edge.
Gallagher scored on the block with 10 seconds remaining to cut UNI's lead to one. The Aces sent Clausen to the line, and she connected on both attempts to stretch UNI's lead to 65-62 with 8.4 seconds on the clock.
Jennings took a three for Evansville, but it hit off the side of the rim to keep the win for the Panthers.
The Panthers shot 26-of-57 (45.6 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 8-of-14 (57.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
Evansville shot 24-of-68 (35.3 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-20 (15.0 percent) from behind the arc. The Aces finished 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Southern Illinois at 2 p.m.
