
Women's Basketball Falls to Indiana State in Overtime, 56-51

The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell in overtime for the second straight game after losing 56-51 in overtime at Indiana State on Friday.UNI led by 11 at the half, but 20-percent shooting in the second period doomed the Panthers.
Nicole Clausen led UNI (8-18, 6-9) with 13 points, and K.K. Armstrong finished with 11 points and five assists.
Kelsie Cooley led all scorers with 22 points. Kara Schilli added 11 for ISU (13-13, 9-6).
With UNI leading 9-8, Indiana State got seven straight points from Kelsie Cooley to take a 15-9 lead with 10:03 to play in the half.
Nicole Clausen scored to cut UNI's deficit to two, 15-13.
A three from Brittany Schoen gave the Sycamores an 18-13 advantage, but K.K. Armstrong to pull UNI within three with 6:02 left in the half. Megan Burton scored at 5:40 to give the Sycamores a 20-15 edge.
Clausen cut the ISU lead to two with a three on UNI's next possession. Lizzie Boeck knocked down a free throw, and then took a steal coast-to-coast for a layup that gave UNI a 21-20 lead with 3:30 left in the half.
Rachel Madrigal and Uhlenhopp scored to extend UNI's advantage to 25-20 with 1:03 on the clock. The Panthers came up with a defensive stop, and Clausen knocked down a three with 36 seconds left. Clausen scored as she was fouled on a fast break with just eight seconds left, and her free throw gave UNI a 31-20 lead at the break. That capped a 16-0 run by UNI to end the first half, and the Panthers held ISU scoreless through the final 5:40 of the first period.
ISU chipped away at the Panther lead, and at 9:03 Cooley connected on a pair of free throws to bring the score to 39-36.
Boeck scored at 8:37 to return it to a two-possession game, but a three from Amanda Pedro cut UNI's lead to a pair, 41-39. Shannon Thomas scored at 5:12 to tie the game at 41-41.
Boeck returned the lead to the Panthers with a pair of free throws at 4:53, but Cooley knocked down a short jumper to tie the game at 43-43 with 4:25 remaining. Cooley scored at 3:02 to give the Sycamores their first lead of the second half, 45-43.
Wypiszynski found Uhlenhopp cutting towards the basket on a backdoor pass, and her layup tied the game at 45-45 with 1:01 on the clock.
Boeck was whistled for a foul on Cooley with 49 seconds left. Cooley missed the front end of the one-and-one, and the Panthers collected the rebound.
Wypiszynski's baseline shot with 29 seconds left hit off the rim, but Boeck was able to gather the rebound to give UNI the final shot. Clausen's three-point attempt didn't fall, and Boeck was able to collect the rebound but was unable to make a putback attempt, sending the game into overtime.
Schilli hit a three on ISU's first possession of the extra period, and Cooley hit a baseline jumper to extend ISU's lead to 50-45.
Clausen scored on a putback at 2:05 to pull UNI within three, 50-47.
Neither team scored again until the Panthers elected to send Sarah Paul to the line with 49 seconds left. ISU was a perfect 6-of-6 from the stripe in the final minute of overtime to hold on for the win.
UNI shot 33.3 percent (19-of-57) from the floor, including 3-of-16 (18.8 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Sycamores finished 19-of-51 (37.3 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-12 (50 percent) from behind the arc. ISU finished 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the free-throw line.
UNI committed 23 turnovers, while ISU turned the ball over 21 times. The Panthers collected a season-high 15 steals, lead by four by K.K. Armstrong. UNI held a 43-32 rebounding edge.
The Panthers return to action on Sunday when they play at Illinois State at 2 p.m.
