
Panthers Come From Behind to Beat Drake, 60-58

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team trailed Drake by 13 late in the second half but was able to rally for a 60-58 win over the Bulldogs Thursday night in the McLeod Center.
UNI (8-16, 6-7) trailed by nine with just 3:33 remaining, but Indy Uhlenhopp hit threes on consecutive possessions to tie the game, 56-56. Nicole Clausen scored with 1:05 remaining to cap an 11-0 UNI run that put the Panthers in front for the first time in the second half, 58-56. After Drake (16-9, 10-4) tied the game with 47 seconds to play, Lizzie Boeck hit a pair of free throws with just 17 seconds left to put UNI in front for good.
Boeck, Uhlenhopp and Nicole Clausen led the Panthers with seven rebounds.
Jordann Plummer scored 15 points to lead Drake, and Amber Wollschlager and Lauren Dybing added 14 and 13, respectively. Kelsey Keiser led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds.
Drake used a 7-0 run to build an 18-10 lead with 12 minutes to play in the first half. Kim Wypiszynski hit a layup off an assist from K.K. Armstrong to end the Bulldog run. Uhlenhopp hit a three at 10:19, and Erin Brocka connected from behind the arc to tie the game, 18-18 with 8:38 left in the half. Neither team led by more than four through the rest of the period, and Wollschlager scored with 30 seconds on the clock to send Drake into the break with a 30-29 edge.
Drake scored the first eight points out of the break to stretch its lead to 38-29. Wypiszynski scored on a jumper and Brocka hit her third three of the game to pull the Panthers within four, 38-34 with 13:39 to play.
UNI was held scoreless for more than five minutes, however, and Drake used the Panther drought to build a 46-34 lead with 8:47 on the clock.
Brocka scored on a coast-to-coast layup to end the Bulldog run and cut the UNI deficit to 10, 46-36 with 7:56 to play.
Dybing connected on a free throw and Plummer knocked down a layup to give Drake its largest lead of the game, 49-36 with 6:36 on the clock.
Uhlenhopp hit a pair of free throws, and Clausen drove into the lane for a layup at 5:38 to cut the Drake lead to single digits, 51-42. Armstrong matched a Dybing layup with a pair of free throws to keep it at a nine-point game, and Boeck followed a basket by Wollschlager with a pair of free throws to make it a 53-44 contest with 4:46 remaining.
Monique Jones made a free throw at 4:17 to give the Bulldogs a 10-point advantage, but Wypiszynski got a layup to fall as she was fouled. Her free throw at 3:54 pulled UNI within seven, 54-47.
Kristin Turk put the Bulldogs in front by nine, 56-47, when she connected from the stripe twice at 3:33, but UNI responded with the 11-0 run to take the lead, 58-56 with 1:05 on the clock.
Wollschlager tied the game with a pair of free throws with 47 seconds left, but Boeck answered with two free throws of her own with just 17 seconds remaining.
Drake had the ball and the chance to tie or take the lead, but Danielle Wubbens took a charge on the defensive end to return the ball to the Panthers with just four seconds on the clock, sealing the win for UNI.
The Panthers shot 19-of-55 (34.5 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-20 (40 percent) from three-point range. UNI finished 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) from the free-throw line.
Drake finished 22-of-43 (51.2 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-5 (60 percent) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs were 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from the free-throw line.
Drake held a slight rebounding advantage, 33-32. Thirteen of UNI's 32 rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in 13 second-chance points.
UNI returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Creighton at 3:05 p.m.
