Panthers Fall at South Dakota, 76-67

VERMILLION, S.D. - The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team ended up on the short end of a back-and-forth game at South Dakota, falling 76-67 to the Coyotes Tuesday night in the DakotaDome. The Panthers trailed by only four points with a minute remaining, but a three-point play from Jasmine Mosley with just 43 seconds on the clock sealed the win for the Coyotes. Kim Wypiszynski finished with 16 points, and Nicole Clausen added 12 for UNI (7-15). Bridget Yoerger led all scorers with 27 points along with 11 rebounds. Kara Iverson finished with 17 points, and Annie Roche and Jasmine Mosley each added 10 points for South Dakota (14-7) Lizzie Boeck scored at 14:06 to tie the game at 11-11, but Bridget Yoerger hit a jumper and a three on consecutive possessions to put USD in front, 16-11. Kim Wypiszynski hit a pair of free throws to cap a 6-0 UNI run that gave the Panthers a 17-16 advantage at 11:12. Yoerger and Wypiszynski traded baskets to keep the Panther edge at one. Erin Brocka found Boeck open on the right block, and her basket gave the Panthers a 21-18 lead. At 7:45, Boeck hit her second three of the game to double the Panthers' lead, 24-18. Kara Iverson answered on the Coyotes' next possession, however, and a three from Maggie Youngberg tied the game at 24-24 with 6:44 left in the half. Clausen drove into the right side of the lane for a layup that returned the lead to UNI, and Madrigal found Boeck on the block for a basket that extended UNI's lead to 28-24 with 3:39 on the clock. Iverson and Boeck traded baskets to keep the Panther lead at four, and K.K. Armstrong hit a pair of free throws at the two-minute mark to stretch UNI's lead to six, 32-26. Wypiszynski answered a basket by Annie Roche to maintain the six-point UNI lead. Roche hit a three with 50 seconds left, and then drove for a layup at the buzzer to end the half on a 5-0 USD run that brought the halftime score to 34-33 in favor of UNI. Wypiszynski got a baseline jumper to fall on UNI's first possession of the second half, but Iverson knocked down a three from the top of the key to tie the game, 36-36. Danielle Wubbens hit a 15-foot jumper to return to lead to UNI, but a pair of free throws from Iverson tied the game again at 38-38. Yoerger scored at 17:30 to put USD in front, 40-38. Boeck scored off a pass from Wypiszynski, and Clausen scored on an in-bound pass under the basket. She knocked down a pair of free throws to stretch the UNI advantage to 44-40. Jasmine Mosley ended UNI's 6-0 run with a baseline jumper, but Oney answered for UNI to keep the Panther lead at four. After a free throw from Mosley cut the USD deficit to three, Boeck scored on the block to put UNI in front by five. Yoerger scored on consecutive possessions to trim the UNI lead to one, 48-47. Wypiszynski scored to make it a three-point game, but baskets from Iverson and Mosley returned the lead to the Coyotes, 51-50 with 8:49 to play. Armstrong drove into the lane for a layup that put the Panthers back in front, 52-51. That lead was short-lived, however, as a jumper from Yoerger and a three from Roche gave the Coyotes a 56-52 lead with 7:50 to play. UNI held South Dakota scoreless for nearly three minutes, and a jumper from Brocka and a pair of free throws from Clausen tied the game for the eighth time, 56-56 with 5:32 to play. Ashley Wiemann and Iverson hit threes for the Coyotes to give USD its largest lead to that point, 62-56 at 3:20 Trailing 64-58, Wypiszynski hit a pair of free throws to pull UNI within four, but Yoerger answered with a basket at 2:03 to keep it at a six-point USD lead, 66-60. Mosley matched a basket by Armstrong with a pair of free throws, making it a 68-62 USD lead with 1:16 on the clock. Wypiszynski made a shot as she was fouled, but her free throw rimmed out to keep the Panther deficit at four, 68-64. Mosley knocked down a layup as she was fouled, and the three-point play gave USD a 71-64 lead with just 42 seconds to play. UNI was able to cut the South Dakota lead to five, but the Panthers could not get any closer on the way to the loss. UNI shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the floor, including 2-of-8 (25 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) from the free-throw line. The Coyotes finished 28-of-51 (54.9 percent) from the floor, including 9-of-15 (60 percent) from behind the arc. USD was 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from the free-throw line. The teams were in eight ties and traded leads 10 times. UNI held a 28-24 rebounding advantage. USD turned UNI's 17 turnovers into 22 points, while the Panthers converted 15 turnovers into eight points. The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they play at Bradley at 7:05 p.m.
