
UNI Women's Basketball Falls to Iowa, 81-70

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team dropped an 81-70 decision to in-state rival Iowa Sunday afternoon in the McLeod Center. The Panthers held a lead in the second half, but the Hawkeyes used an 11-point run midway through the period to take a lead they would never relinquish.
Nicole Clausen led the Panthers (0-3) with 12 points, and K.K. Armstrong and Jacqui Kalin each finished with 11. Lizzie Boeck added 10 points for UNI. Armstrong led the Panthers with nine rebounds, and Boeck grabbed eight.
Kamille Wahlin led all scorers with 33 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-10 from three-point range. Jaime Printy and Theairra Taylor each scored 12 points for the Hawkeyes (3-1). Morgan Johnson finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and seven blocked shots for Iowa.
A pair of free throws from Danielle Wubbens responded with a mid-range jumper to put the Panthers in front, 25-21.
Wahlin connected from long distance again, making the score 25-24 with 3:47 on the clock. Rachel Madrigal converted an offensive rebound into two points, and Jacqui Kalin sank a three to stretch the Panther lead to 30-24 with 2:35 remaining in the period.
Trisha Nesbitt cut into the UNI lead with a jumper, but Kalin drained another three to put the Panthers in front 33-26 with 1:46 left in the half.
Iowa rattled off six points in a span of 40 seconds to pull within a point, 33-32. Kim Wypiszynski converted a pair of free throws to send UNI into the break in front, 35-32.
The Panthers scored the first five points of the second half, stretching their lead to 38-32. Printy and Brocka traded layups to keep the UNI lead at six, but Iowa scored six straight points to tie the game, 40-40 with 15:57 remaining.
Wypiszynski hit a layup and then connected on a pair of free throws to give UNI a 44-40 edge. The Hawkeyes were able to go on an 11-0 run over the next 3:15 to claim a 53-46 lead with 11:31 on the clock.
The Panthers chipped away at the Hawkeye lead, and Armstrong hit a pair of free throws at 5:47 that brought the score to 57-56 in favor of Iowa. Wahlin knocked down a three on the ensuing possession, however, making it a 60-56 Hawkeye lead. Armstrong and Wahlin traded free throws, and Wahlin connected from behind the arc with 4:16 left to put the Hawkeye lead back at seven, 65-58 with 4:16 to play.
Boeck cut into the Iowa lead with a pair of free throws, but Morgan Johnson scored as she was fouled on the next trip down for the Hawkeyes. The free throw put Iowa in front 68-60 with 3:58 remaining.
The Iowa lead stayed between six and eight points until Brocka connected on a three from the top of the key to bring the score to 72-67. Wahlin and Armstrong each made one of two free-throw attempts to keep the Iowa advantage at five, 73-68, with 55 seconds on the clock.
UNI elected to foul after the Armstrong free throw, and Taylor knocked down both attempts. UNI came up empty-handed on its next possession, and Taylor scored a pair from the free-throw line to extend the Hawkeye lead to 77-68 with 37 seconds on the clock. The Panthers were never able to cut their deficit to less than seven from that point as Iowa finished 4-of-4 from the stripe inside the final 30 seconds.
The Panthers shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor in the game, including 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers made 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) free-throw attempts. UNI was 13-of-31 (41.9 percent) from the field in the first half, but dropped to 10-of-33 (33.3 percent) in the second period. UNI's three-point shooting cooled from 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) to 1-of-7 (14.3 percent).
Iowa shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor, including a 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) performance in the second half. The Hawkeyes shot 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from three-point range, and they converted 17-of-21 (81.0 percent) free-throw attempts.
The Panthers outrebounded Iowa, 42-34. UNI turned 18 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points. Iowa grabbed just five offensive boards, which it turned into five second-chance points.
UNI committed 16 turnovers, resulting in 15 points for the Hawkeyes. The Panthers turned Iowa's 18 turnovers into 17 points.
The Panthers will return to action when they play Louisville on Friday in the first round of the Cancun Thanksgiving Classic.
