WATERLOO, Iowa – The University of Northern Iowa scored two goals in the first period to secure a 2-1 win over South Dakota in the second game of the Panther Invitational. Chelsie Hochstedler finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Nicole Ferlito put the Panthers on the board at the 31:14 mark when she took a pass from Hochstedler and broke through the defense to find the back of the net.
Hochstedler extended the Panther lead to 2-0 at the 44:00 minute mark when she took a shot from the right side that slipped past South Dakota's Jennifer Ogren.
The Coyotes put up a fight in the second half, narrowing the Panther lead to 2-1 when Sarah Halbach scored for South Dakota at the 84:29 mark, but it was too little too late as the Panther defense held strong for the win.
UNI goalkeeper Lauren Potzman registered five saves in the contest. UNI took just 13 shots in the contest, with South Dakota registering 11.
UNI (2-9-1) returns to action Sunday as they wrap up the Panther Invitational against North Dakota. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Mark Messersmith Track and Field Complex on the UNI campus.
