CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -
The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team fell behind early and was never able to catch up in a 76-49 loss to Green Bay Saturday afternoon in the McLeod Center.
Nicole Clausen shot 5-of-7 from three-point range to lead the Panthers (2-5) with 15 points. Kim Wypiszynski finished with 10 points for UNI. Alexa Mennen added seven points and five rebounds for the Panthers.
Green Bay (7-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Celeste Hoewisch's 16 points. Erin Templin and Lavesa Glover each scored 13 points for the Phoenix.
Clausen put the Panthers on the board first with a three from the top of the key on the Panthers' first possession of the game. Green Bay responded right away, however, scoring the game's next 12 points to build a 12-3 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half.
Wypiszynski scored on UNI's next possession, and Clausen countered a pair of Green Bay free throws with her second three of the game to trim the Panther deficit to six, 14-8 with 13:01 on the clock.
Green Bay scored four points in the next minute to build an 18-8 advantage. The Phoenix lead stayed between nine and 11 points until an 8-2 Green Bay run brought the score to 34-18 with 5:12 on the clock
K.K. Armstrong cut the UWGB lead to 14 with a layup at 5:02, but the Phoenix outscored the Panthers 10-1 over the next 3:30 to build a 44-21 lead. Green Bay would lead by as many as 25 points in the first half before taking a 48-24 lead into the break.
Green Bay scored on its first possession of the second half to build a 26-point advantage. The Panthers put together a bit of a rally, and with 16:12 remaining, Lizzie Boeck converted a three-point play to bring the score to 53-35.
The Panthers were never able to pull any closer, however. Hoewisch hit a three on Green Bay's next possession, and the Panthers trailed by at least 20 and as many as 29 from that point.
UNI shot 17-of-41 (41.5 percent) from the floor, including 6-of-19 (31.6 percent) from three-point range. The Panthers were 9-of-17 (52.9 percent) from the free-throw line.
Green Bay finished 25-of-49 (51 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from three-point range. The Phoenix were 22-of-25 (88 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Panthers committed a season-high 33 turnovers in the loss, 20 of them coming on Green Bay steals. The Phoenix were able to convert those into 33 points.
