
Panthers Top Bradley 64-62 in MVC Opener

The Panthers trailed by one with just 1:22 on the clock, but UNI senior Traci Ollendieck connected from behind the arc on the left baseline to put the Panthers in front. Monica Rogers tied the game for the Braves with 24 seconds left. Freshman Alexa Mennen to knock down a short baseline jumper with just three ticks left on the clock to seal the win for the Panthers.
Kalin led the Panthers (5-7, 1-0) with 17 points and six assists. Mennen finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for UNI, both career highs for the sophomore. Nicole Clausen added 12 points and five rebounds for UNI.
Bradley took advantage of some early UNI turnovers to take a quick 4-0 lead. Danielle Wubbens connected from long range to put the Panthers on the board with 17 minutes left in the first half. Lizzie Boeck scored on a short jumper to put the Panthers in front, 5-4 with 16:47 to play in the period.
That would set the tone for the first 13:30 of the game, which saw the teams trade leads 13 times over that span. Clausen hit a jumper at the 6:30 mark to put UNI in front, 23-22. Kalin stretched the Panther lead to three with a layup on UNI's next possession, but Krumwiede made it a one-point game, 25-24, with a jumper with five minutes on the clock. The Panthers outscored the Braves 13-3 through the rest of the period to build a 38-27 lead going into the break.
Krumwiede hit a pair of free-throws to trim UNI's lead to single digits, 38-29, but the Panthers scored the next five points to build a 43-29 lead with 17:21 to play.
The Braves slowly chipped away at the Panther lead, however, and with 8:03 left on the clock
Mennen hit a layup to extend the Panthers' lead back to seven, but Bradley used a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 55-55 with 4:49 to play.
Ollendieck hit a pair of free throws with 4:30 on the clock to put the Panthers back in the lead, but
Mennen was sent to the line with 2:43 to play, and she connected on both to tie the game for the fifth time, 59-59.
Renee Frericks connected on one of two free-throw tries to put the Braves in front, 60-59 with 2:26 to play. Just over a minute later, Ollendieck hit the go-ahead three for the Panthers.
UNI shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor, including a 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) performance in the first half. The Panthers were 6-of-25 (28.0 percent) from three-point range and 15-of-18 (83.3 percent) from the free-throw line.
Bradley shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the floor, including 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) from long distance. The Braves were 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
The win ends a five-game losing streak for the Panthers. UNI returns to action on Thursday, Jan.10, when it plays at
