KANSAS CITY, Mo. -
Jordan Eglseder scored 19 points, Jared Josten added 14 points, and Eric Coleman recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a 64-60 overtime win at UMKC Wednesday night.Josten and Coleman took over down the stretch in regulation and in overtime. At one point, the senior duo combined for 15 straight UNI points - the last five of regulation and the first 10 of the extra session.
With just two seconds remaining on the shot clock, Josten scored a layup off an inbounds play to put the Panthers in front for good, 54-52, in OT. After UMKC misfired on the ensuing possession, Coleman converted a three-point play to put UNI up 57-52. The Kangaroos pulled within two on several occasions after that, but was forced to foul down the stretch, and UNI hit its free throws to seal the victory. The Panthers were 8-of-9 from the line in overtime.
Eglseder was the offensive catalyst in the first half. He hit 6-of-7 field goals and scored 14 of his 19 points before intermission, as the Panthers built a 29-20 lead at the break. The Panthers defense was stellar early, holding the Kangaroos to just seven points in the first 12 minutes of the game. After falling behind by as many as seven, UMKC rallied to tied the score at 14-all, but UNI scored eight straight - including a three-pointer by Kerwin Dunham and a conventional three-point play from Eglseder - to move back in front 22-14.
The Kangaroos came out on fire early in the second half, going on a 9-2 run over the first three minutes to pull within 31-29. UNI took timeout, and responded by scoring nine straight of its own, including a three-pointer from Josten, to go in front 40-29 with 11 minutes left in regulation. But UMKC rallied, going on a 16-5 run over the next eight minutes, and took its first lead of the game, 46-45, on a jumper from Dane Brumagin with 3:52 left. There was one tie and three lead changes over the next three minutes, and UMKC's Brent Stephens hit one of two foul shots to give the Kangaroos a 50-48 lead with 1:16 left. Eglseder missed a contested layup, but Travis Brown grabbed the offensive rebound, and Coleman was fouled with 38 seconds left. He calmly drained both free throws to pull the Panthers even, forcing overtime with the teams at 50.
For the game, UNI shot 47 percent from the field, while holding UMKC to 33 percent shooting. The Panthers were 18-of-23 at the foul line, while the Kangaroos were 16-for-24.
With the win, UNI improved to 8-2 on the season, while UMKC fell to 4-8. The Panthers return home to host Nevada this Saturday afternoon at the McLeod Center, with tipoff set for 1 pm.
