CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - The No. 25-ranked University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad dropped a 29-10 dual to the No. 2-ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday afternoon in the McLeod Center.
Head coach Brad Penrith credited his team with a stronger effort than Thursday's 40-3 loss at No. 1-ranked Iowa.
"It was definitely a better performance than Iowa," Penrith said. "We still have some work to do. I'm not happy about losing to (Iowa State), but we have things to work on."
The Cyclones began the meet with a fall at the 2:12 mark of the first period from Cyler Sanderson at 157 pounds. Sanderson caught UNI's Jarion Beets in a cradle and was able to tilt him for the fall.
The Panthers bounced right back with a pair of wins from 165-pounder Moza Fay and 174-pounder Alex Dolly.
Fay earned his 9-6 win in an unconventional manner as he tallied three reversals, while his opponent Jon Reader also had two reversals in the match. Fay secured a takedown at the 1:43 mark of the first period and that stood as the only takedown of the match. Fay is ranked No. 5, while Reader came into the match ranked No. 6 at 165 pounds.
"I had definitely thought about his match ahead of time because (Reader) had beaten me before," Fay said. "He was also a ranked guy and that motivated me to get it done today. I took some time to reflect after the Iowa match over the past two days and it gave me a chance to think about how I was preparing and practicing. It gave me the motivation to wrestle here today."
Dolly secured a 16-6 major decision over ISU's Chris Pursel. Dolly was able to take advantage of three tilts in the second period to put the match in his favor.
"I'm usually not a big on top guy," Dolly said. "I would have liked to have gotten the pin or the technical fall but he was too slippery. I couldn't get a good grip and tilt him all the way over. I don't usually get many turns or tilts at all."
At 184 pounds, No. 1-ranked Jake Varner scored a 10-0 win over Danny Dunning. The match was scoreless after the first period but Varner was able to score six points in the second period to take control.
ISU's David Bertolino pinned the Panthers' Andrew Anderson at the 2:38 mark of the their 197-pound match. Anderson had scored first on a takedown, but Bertolino locked in a cradle and notched the fall.
"Andrew was wrestling well until that cradle," Penrith said.
The Cyclones' heavyweight David Zabriskie kept the momentum rolling for the visitors with a 12-4 win over UNI's Dustin Bauman.
ISU then rolled off three more wins at 125, 133 and 141. Mark Kist (125 lbs.) earned a 4-3 win over Trent Washington, and Nick Gallick (141 lbs.) secured a 6-2 victory over C.J. Ettelson.
"Our 125-pounder is not pulling the trigger," Penrith said. "Then our 133-pounder is cutting a lot of weight but he has a lot of talent. (Trent) just doesn't realize the kind of competition he's wrestling right now - and he's a true freshman. C.J. has started his last three dual matches being down 4-0. He needs to learn to protect his legs. He's a fifth-year senior and should know how to do those things."
UNI redshirt freshman Nick Pickerell (149 lbs.) picked up his first collegiate dual win with a 6-4 victory over ISU's Adam Ketcher to conclude the meet.
The Panthers will be in action next at Midlands on Dec. 29-30.
