
Men's Hoops Opens Season With 75-45 Rout of Northern Illinois

Cedar Falls, Iowa - Sophomore center Jordan Eglseder scored 16 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to a 75-45 win over Northern Illinois Friday night in the BTI Tip-Off Tournament hosted by the Panthers at the McLeod Center.
Eglseder posted his first career double-double in his first career start. The 7-1 native of Bellevue, Iowa, added two assists and also blocked three shots in 25 minutes of action. He was joined in double figures by junior guard Travis Brown who scored 14 points, and senior guard Jared Josten who added 11. Both Brown and Josten each made three three-pointers, as UNI connected on 10-of-21 shots from downtown on the evening. UNI also held a commanding 48-30 advantage in rebounding.
Northern Illinois got off to an 8-5 lead after the opening five minutes of play, before UNI got going. An Eric Coleman layup started a 30-4 run over the next 10 minutes, as the Panthers opened a 35-12 advantage. Coleman, Josten and Eglseder had six points apiece during that run, and freshman Jon Montgomery added five. UNI, which shot 55 percent from the field in the opening half (including 5-of-8 from downtown), held a 40-18 lead at intermission. Northern Illinois connected on just 31 percent of its shots in the first half and was 0-for-6 on three-pointers.
UNI's lead never got below 20 points in the second half, and extended its advantage to as many as 36 (63-37) late in the game.
Panthers' sophomore forward Adam Koch had six assists and 13 rebounds, while Montgomery chipped in with nine. Coleman scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and had two blocks in just 15 minutes of action. A total of 12 UNI players saw action, with nine of them scoring.
UNI is now 1-0 on the season while Northern Illinois is 0-1. The BTI Tip-Off Tournament continues tomorrow at the McLeod Center, with UMass facing Northern Illinois at 5:45, and UNI meeting Cal Poly at 8:15. Earlier today, UMass defeated Cal Poly 90-64.
