The University of Northern Iowa women's basketball team tied a school record with 11 threes as the Panthers cruised to a 90-75 win over Detroit-Mercy in Detroit on Saturday. UNI had four players in double figures, led by Tara King, who finished with 19. Megan Keefe added a career-high 17 points, and Jessie Biggs scored 13 while Sarah Larsen added a season-high 15 points.
The Panthers (3-5) shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) from the floor, including an 11-of-22 (50 percent) performance from three-point range, marking season highs in shooting percentage and three-point shooting percentage for the Panthers. The Panthers' 90 points are the most scored by UNI since topping Southern Illinois 90-55 on Jan. 29, 2004.
Biggs knocked down a three on the first possession of the game to give UNI an early lead. Panthers were able to stretch their lead to 14-7 with 14:50 left in the half, but Detroit (1-7) scored two unanswered baskets to cut the UNI lead to 14-11 with 11:23 on the clock.
The Panthers limited Detroit to just a three from Massey over the next six minutes, outscoring the Titans 12-3 over that span and building a 26-14 lead with 5:10 to play.
A trio of free throws by the Titans cut the Panther lead to nine, 26-17 with 4:24 left in the half. The Panthers outscored Detroit 12-4 through the rest of the period to build a 38-21 halftime advantage.
Detroit was able to cut UNI's lead to 12 early in the second half, but the Panthers clawed back to stretch their lead to 20, 63-43 on a three-point play from Lindsay Swanson with 8:36 remaining. The Panthers never led by fewer than 15 from that point on. The Panthers shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the floor in the second half, and led by as many as 23 points on the way to the win.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday when they host Valparaiso at 4:05 p.m. in the McLeod Center.
