
UNI Rushes to 34-14 Win at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The University of Northern Iowa senior placekicker Brian Wingert became the school's all-time leading scorer and the Panthers recorded a 34-14 victory over the Indiana State University Sycamores Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Wingert passed Dedric Ward's 300-point mark with an extra point at the 0:25 mark of the third quarter. Wingert came into the game with 291 points and added two field goals and four extra points to surpass Ward.
The UNI running game was in full effect as the Panthers eclipsed the 400-plus yard mark on the ground. UNI rushed for 439 yards against the Sycamores.
Junior running back Darian Williams rushed for a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns, while senior wide receiver Curt Bradley also rushed for a career-high with 78 yards on only five carries.
UNI improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in Gateway Football Conference play, while Indiana State fell to 0-7 overall and 0-3 in Gateway games. It was also the 24th straight loss for the Sycamores.
The Panthers broke into the scoring column first with 17 seconds left in the first quarter on a 32-yard field goal from senior Brian Wingert. The drive was set up by a fumble recovery by junior safety Chris Parsons.
UNI increased the lead to 10-0 at the 10:22 mark of the second quarter on a one-yard touchdown plunge by junior running back Darian Williams.
UNI extended the advantage to 17-0 with 3:31 left in the second quarter on another one-yard run by Williams. The key play in the drive was a 45-yard pass play from junior quarterback Eric Sanders to Williams to put the ball on the Indiana State six-yard line. The scored capped a 10-play 94-yard drive.
The Panthers drove into Sycamore territory late in the second quarter and came away with a three-pointer from Wingert. Wingert's 35-yard field goal with only six seconds left in the half to put UNI on top, 20-0.
Indiana State took advantage of a Panther miscue to start the second half and trimmed the UNI lead to 20-7 at the 12:48 mark of the third quarter. Quarterback Ben Schmidt scored on a keeper from the one-yard line. The Sycamores used a short field to score the touchdown after UNI running back Whitney Lewis fumbled for the second time in the contest.
UNI secured the momentum with an 81-yard drive that was capped by an 11-yard touchdown run by wide receiver James Lindgren. The score came at the 4:01 mark of the third quarter and gave UNI a 27-7 lead.
The Panthers added another touchdown on the ground when Sanders scored from three yards out with 25 seconds left in the third quarter. It was UNI's fourth rushing touchdown of the game and gave the Panthers a 34-7 lead.
Indiana State scored via its air attack with 9:19 remaining in the game on a 17-yard pass from Reilly Murphy to Carl Berman.
UNI will be in action next Saturday at Youngstown State. The kick is set for 3 p.m. (Central) and will be broadcast on KFXA/KDSM.
