Cedar Falls, Iowa -
The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team held Furman scoreless in the first period. However, the Paladins outscored UNI 4-0 in the second period to defeat the Panthers in both squads' first regular-season game tonight.
"We learned that we have to put ninety minutes together," Interim head coach Kathy Kakoyianni-Bering said. "Overall, I am very pleased with the way we played. It was an amazing learning experience for us to see this caliber and speed of team right now in our season. We knew we had to step it up - now we know how much more we need to step it up.
"At times, we were right there with them. [Furman] was so good that they dominated anytime we let down or made a mistake. We just have to put together a solid ninety minutes."
Senior midfielder Nicky Darling scored the first goal of the game at the 56 minute 40 second mark and senior forward Andrea Morrison knocked two between the posts in the second half. Freshman midfielder Rachel Fry tallied a goal and an assist for the Paladins.
UNI and Furman were both issued a yellow card near the end of the game.
