
Panthers Take Down Northern Illinois Huskies 23-17

The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team prevailed in a hard fought battle against the Northern Illinois Huskies this afternoon in the West Gym. The Panthers led the dual 17-3 through five matches but the Huskies fought back to even it up with two matches remaining. Jeff Harrison and Chris Bitetto then gave UNI six points to win.
The meet started off at the 165 weight class with 12th-ranked Nick Baima facing Waterloo (IA) native Johnny Galloway of NIU. Baima scored first with a takedown at
At 174, eighth-ranked senior Eric Hauan came out hot scoring a takedown on NIU's Danny Burk in 15 seconds. Hauan scored a three-point near fall in the first period, earning a 9-2 lead. Late in the second period, Hauan scored another three-point near fall and brought the score to 15-2. Burk chose top for the third period and Hauan ended the face off with a reversal to win by tech fall in
Dan Dunning and Derick Lalowski matched up at 184. The two went scoreless until Dunning scored at takedown with :42 left in the first period. Lalowski fought back in the second, bringing the score to 7-3. Dunning eventually won with riding time in an 8-6 decision.
Sixth-ranked Sean Stender didn't waste any time on NIU's Brandon Check, running up the score to 8-3 by the end of the first period. In the closing seconds of the second period, Stender got his sixth fall of the season pinning Check in
Sophomore Jeff Knoll leaped up a weight class to fill in for the second straight week at heavyweight against NIU's Joe Sapp. The two went scoreless through the first period but ended up going into overtime where Knoll picked up his first collegiate dual victory.
Redshirt freshman Adam Baumgartner made his varsity debut at 125 against Husky Chad Vandiver. Vandiver took an early lead finishing the first period with a 5-0 advantage. The two went into the third period with Vandiver leading 11-0. Vandiver defeated Baumgartner in
Sophomore Ryan Osgood fell into the 133 rotation against the Huskies' only ranked wrestler, #14 Sam Hiatt. Osgood took initiative in the first period scoring two takedowns. Hiatt fought back in the second period, taking a 5-4 lead. Osgood chose down to kick off the third period and finally scored an escape with :54 seconds left tying it up 5-5. Hiatt took the hard fought battle with riding time 6-5.
At 141, NIU's Josh Wooten faced off against redshirt freshman C.J. Ettelson. Wooten dominated the mat, pinning Ettelson in
Senior Jeff Harrison led NIU's Mike Grimes 4-1 at the end of the first period. Grimes answered back in the second bring the score to 4-4 going into the third. Jeff Harrison fought off Grimes efforts to tie it up in the waning seconds of the match, winning by a 6-4 decision.
Emotions ran high going into the final match with UNI leading the Huskies 20-17. Chris Bitetto took on Joe Henning at 157 pounds. Bitetto led 2-1 after the first period and 3-1 after the second. Bitetto sealed UNI's victory with an 8-2 decision over the Husky.
