Ames, Iowa - Sophomore center Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds, but it was not enough as Iowa State defeated the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball, team, 68-61, at Hilton Coliseum.
Coleman connected on 9-of-15 field goal attempts, and all seven of his boards were on the offensive end of the court. He also dished out four assists and had two blocked shots. Coleman was joined in double-figure scoring by senior guard Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) added 10.
Iowa State (4-1) held a 36-33 lead at halftime, and maintained its advantage throughout the second half. A Jacobson steal and uncontested layup pulled UNI (3-1) within two, 54-52, with less than eight minutes remaining. But ISU proceeded to go on a 12-3 run over the next five minutes to open a 66-55 lead and put the game away.
The Panthers led, 20-14, with 10 minutes left in the first half. But a Curtis Stinson three-pointer started a 12-0 Cyclone run in just two minutes of play that gave ISU a 26-20 advantage. UNI had three turnovers against Iowa State's press during that stretch. The Panthers were able to regroup, pulling to within three, 36-33, at halftime.
UNI struggled shooting the ball, connecting on 43.9 percent of its field goals, and were just 6-for-26 from three-point range (23.1 percent). Iowa State made 53.8 percent of its shots and were 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from behind the arc. Stinson led Iowa State with 19 points.
The Panthers return home to face Loyola-Chicago this Saturday (Dec. 3) in the UNI-Dome, with tipoff set for 7:05 p.m.
