Cedar Falls, Iowa - Eric Coleman (Maplewood, Minn.) scored a team-high 19 points, while Ben Jacobson added 16 - including three three-pointers in the final three minutes of regulation - to lead the University of Northern Iowa men's basketball team to thrilling 67-63 overtime win over 12th-ranked Iowa in front of a crowd of 13,288 at the UNI-Dome Tuesday night.
With the Hawkeyes leading, 52-47 in the second half, Jacobson hit a trey to cut the lead to 52-50. After an Iowa miss, Jacobson hit another on the ensuing possession to give the Panthers the lead. Greg Brunner answered for Iowa to give the Hawks a 54-53 lead with 1:54 left. UNI looked for Jacobson again, and he came off a double screen to hit a deep trey from the top of the key to give UNI a 56-54 advantage with 1:39 left.
Brunner tied the game with two free throws, before UNI ran the clock down for a final shot to win the game in regulation. Jacobson's three rimmed out, and Brunner's desperation three-point attempt from 50 feet hit the rim as time expired.
Neither team scored the first two minutes of overtime. John Little (Peoria, Ill.) hit a big three-pointer to give UNI a 59-58 lead, and after a Hawkeye basket, Erik Crawford (Oakdale, Minn.) gave the Panthers the lead for good. After Jacobson missed back-to-back three-pointers - but got the offensive rebound each time - Crawford nailed a trey to make the score 62-60 with 45 seconds left. UNI hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
In addition to Coleman and Jacobson, Grant Stout (New Sharon, Iowa) was also in double figures for UNI, with 11 points and nine rebounds. Iowa's Brunner led all players with 26 points and added 10 rebounds.
The win was UNI ninth straight at home. The Panthers (5-1) have beaten Iowa three straight times at home - each time when the Hawkeyes (7-2) were ranked in the nation's top 25.
UNI's next game is this Saturday night (Dec. 10) when it hosts UMKC. Tipoff is set for 7:05 p.m. in the UNI-Dome.
