UNI Improves to 3-3, Defeating Eastern Illinois and Virginia Tech

The University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad evened its dual record in the West Gym today as the Panthers defeated Eastern Illinois, 38-7 and Virginia Tech, 32-10.
The first of three duals of the day pitted two Panther squads with the victor going to the purple and old gold. UNI used eight wins, three falls and one forfeit to destroy EIU, 38-7. Ryan Osgood, Nick Baima and Sean Stender earned six team points each as the three tallied up pins before the end of the second period.
The second dual welcomed Eastern Illinois and Virginia Tech to the West Gym. Virginia Tech forfeited three matches on the day, but earned six wins in return to overcome EIU, 32-18.
UNI's second dual of the day matched an unfamiliar foe. The Panthers and Hokies, whom have never crossed paths in previous seasons, locked up for the last dual of the afternoon. Junior Chris Helgeson set the tone for the Panthers early on as he defeated Justin Staylor, 9-8. With one second left in the match, Helgeson recorded a two point nearfall to edge the Hokie for the win.
All-American's Nick Baima earned major decisions in the UNI win.
UNI improves to 3-3 on the season while Virginia Tech and Eastern Illinois fall to 9-4 and 0-3, respectively. The Panthers will travel to Iowa State January 15th to battle the third ranked Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum in Ames (IA).
