Cedar Falls, Iowa -
The University of Northern Iowa wrestling squad hosted the Oklahoma State Cowboys tonight in the West Gym. Two Olympic Gold Medalists were in attendance in former Panther Bill Smith and Oklahoma State head coach Jon Smith.
The Cowboys took eight matches from the Panthers, including the first five. Freshman Dan Dunning got his first UNI dual win, upsetting Jack Jenson. With the 30-6 loss, UNI falls to 4-7 and OSU holds on to its undefeated record.
125 - Cowboy freshman Coleman Scott scored the first points of the match, getting an escape at the beginning of the second period. Chris Helgeson countered with a near takedown but was pushed out-of-bounds before he could complete the task. Scott was then called for stalling, which set the score at one-all heading into the third period and eventual overtime. Scott scored a takedown within 12 seconds in overtime, earning the sudden victory.
133 - Two freshmen squared off with Jeremy Meyer and tenth-ranked Nathan Morgan. Morgan scored an early takedown and a two-point near fall in the first period. Meyer battled back, getting two escapes. In the waning minutes of the third period, Morgan got a takedown and riding time, defeating Meyer 8-2.
141 - Freshman Justin Swafford could not contain Cowboy Daniel Frishkorn, falling by a technical fall in 5:00.
149 - Second-ranked Zack Esposito and seventh-ranked Jeff Harrison knocked heads for the first time this season. Esposito scored a quick takedown in the first but Harrison chose down and escaped in the second, narrowing his deficit. Although Harrison led in shots, he eventually fell 6-2 to the Cowboy.
157 - Junior Chris Bitetto scored his first takedown in the second period, narrowing 16th-ranked Kevin Ward's lead to three. That is the closest the Hackensack (NJ) native would come to Ward, losing 11-5 with riding time.
165 - Nick Baima gave Panther fans something to cheer about with two takedowns in the first period. Baima widened his lead over Sam Lewnes in the second period with an escape and two more takedowns. He gave the Panthers their first points of the dual with a 12-6 victory.
174 - Senior Eric Hauan could not muster a win over undefeated 2004 National Champion Chris Pendleton. Even though Hauan scored the first takedown of the match, Pendleton countered with two of his own in the first period.
184 - Waterloo (IA) native Dan Dunning picked up his first collegiate dual victory against OSU's Jack Jensen. Dunning never trailed, scoring one takedown in the first period and a two-point near fall in the second.
197 - Senior Sean Stender grabbed the first takedown against Jake Rosholt, but could not hold on to the lead, falling 6-2 to the top-ranked Cowboy.
HWT - Sophomore Jeff Knoll stepped into an injured Michael Shedek's position. He fell to top-ranked Steve Mocco in 49 seconds.
