In its first regular season game of the 2004 season, the UNI women's soccer team tied Western Illinois, 1-1, on Friday at Mackenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Ill. Both teams played an aggressive and physical match that lasted the full 90-minute regulation and two overtime periods. The Panthers scored their lone goal in the tenth minute as junior Michelle Young (San Antonio, TX.) took a loose ball in the box from junior Kaitlin Stimpson (Shoreview, Minn.) and squeezed it through the legs of Western's goaltender, Carey Cowhey. UNI controlled much of the first half, out-shooting WIU 9-7. In the 75th minute Kelly Warner found the back of the net for Western Illinois with an unassisted 20-yard strike. In the second half the Leathernecks out-shot the Panthers 14-5. Freshman goalie Krista Thorley (Ontario, Canada) played stellar defense for UNI recording 11 saves in 110 minutes protecting the net. Junior forward Shanon Dechant (Marion, Iowa) led the Panthers with five shots, three on goal, while Stimpson and sophomore Candice Divoky (Solon, Iowa) each fired three shots. UNI will stay on the road and travel to Minneapolis, Minn. to take on the University of Minnesota on Sunday (Aug. 29). Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Panther's first home game will be on September 10th against Wisconsin-Green Bay starting at 6 p.m.
